I just had a chat with my insurance company Priviledge about remapping my car and they said that they are no longer insuring any vehicle that has been remapped at all. They not only wont insure increases in bhp but they wont insure ECO maps or power decreases either. They tell me that whilst they used to cover remaps, their claims experience means that they wont anymore. That wasn't the answer I was wanting or expecting:(

When I had the trial Hirsch remap on my Saab, the dealer reckoned there was no way an insurance company would know as they wouldn't have a copy of the original map to compare against (they weren't recommending not to tell them...) - BUT, a friend of a friend who works for a garage that is used by some insurance companies to check over crashed cars, says that actually they can detect a remap and in 99% of cases will know if it's been done!

These "supermarket" style insurers (Direct Line etc) are very reluctant to do anything out of the ordinary for anybody - they want simple, straight forward business. Would love to hear any experiences with people who are insured with customer friendly companies.

Ive had a few remaps never told anyone LOL !

So, if you buy a car that has been remapped and you didn't know, where do you stand...
Good question!! That's exactly what I asked and I was told they'd contact the previous owner for details.... Not sure if I believe that though...

Not worth taking the risk... My insurer no extra premium. But I now know that I am fully covered and my home is not at risk. Think about it - you cause an accident and the insurer has to pay out massive 3rd party claim for injuries - he's coming after you for you house et al.

When I modified my car, I did a search using confused.com.....they have a section where you can state what modifications have been done to the car....in my case it was power increase up to 20%...confused.com then did a search and came up with quotes for me.....I ended up with Admiral who quoted me only a few ££ more than for a standard car

I really belief the days that insurances companies will ensured a remapped car are coming to an end fast. Statisitcally these cars are far more liely to be in a collision than standard cars, ask any insrance expert. If you want more power, buy a more powerful car.

Can you point us to the evidence that suggests this?

And pay more insurance...

When I installed the Brabus D6 pack on my previous C320 Cdi, I had no problems with Direct Line. However, the cost was crazy, but I knew I was covered and the car was fun fun fun :bannana:

Since April, Direct Line no longer accepts more power/remap etc.

However, as mentioned, Admiral does and the rates are very good. When making a quote, one has the option of ticking the box for power increase at various % incriments.

It is also very true that Insurance companies does reguarly check cars for any proof of remapped ECU's or whatever in case of cars being written off. They will do anything not having to pay out a penny. So while you may not be covered, you can then also get done for driving without insurance and risking much more than just a small fee......
