Retrofit a revcounter to W124

Now here's a stupid question. I don't recall having a vehicle without a revcounter until now so can I retrofit one?

I know it would be a fairly pointless feature on a 250 D but I find the huge clock that I get in its place unsightly. Other W124 models have a revcounter and smaller clock where I just have my clock.

If I were to get hold of the face, from a breakers or wherever, presumably the clock would power from wherever mine already does but what (if anything) would power the revcounter? Are they cable driven or electronic? And will my engine have a facility to power it?

I'm hoping that my engine shares whatever the TD version has that's needed

As a sidenote, I bought this car as a cheap hack and find myself being drawn towards improving and restoring it. I blame you guys for this :p

Rob, the taco is an electric one. I believe it picks up a pulse from a sensor at the rear of the engine (flywheel) I may be wrong on that bit, but if you go ahead give me a shout as I have a cluster in the shed I am breaking.

Thanks Ian, I definitely want to go ahead with it but only if it's possible. As far as I know, the 5 cylinder 250 diesel motor only came in D and TD models so it might be that my D has no facility on the engine to power a tacho. I'll be seeing a mechanic pal in a week or so and I'll ask him to look.

What is it that you're breaking? The instument cluster or whole dash? I could be doing with a few good used bits (aside from the tacho), as follows:

* Centre and driver's side air vents (with wheel adjusters and fixings)
* Electric window adjuster button and surround
* Front overhead light unit (the switch is missing)
* Passenger sun visor in grey
* Nothing to do with the dash but I need a pair of good headlights too

I'm deviating into interior territory now so I may repost this in there but please let me know if you have any of the above and how much you want for them. Same goes for anyone else reading this.

I have a 200T Estate (W124) that is going for spares some of the items you are enquiring about are available
