I've recently had a bit of a clear out car wise and like the idea of having a 4x4 around for doing 4x4 duties, for weekends, tip runs, doggie chauffeur, days out, etc. My last ML was an 06MY 500 that was sold mid 2021 and the one before that was a 2011MY 2.1 derv that I bought new but only owned for a few months.

Ideally I'd like a petrol but they're too few of them about (and they are advertised for strong money) so a derv might have to do. It won't be doing many miles during the week but will at weekends. Will the derv be up for this? Is there anything I need to look out for when going to view one? I'm aware of anything and everything electrical, rust and rear light seals but unsure mechanically under the hood. I've got an icarsoft scanner that I'll be taking with me.

Is it the W164 generation you have in mind again? If so then I would be tempted to hold out for a petrol. Sounds like you won’t be covering huge mileage, and the W164 is one of the last SUVs available with a large capacity naturally aspirated V6 or V8, without the complications of forced induction, stop/start, complex emissions controls, etc.

Hi BD, yes preferably the 164's. Would like another 500 but they are like hen's teeth on a good day and I totally get what you are saying about petrol v's derv. Bought another caravan today so need something with a bit of clout to tow it.

Have been looking at ML's, X5's, Range Rover 3.6/4.4 and Jeep Grand Cherokee. All diesels, as well looking at Lexus RX's. Some crazy prices around at the moment.
