Morning all.

This is the first winter i've had my 212 estate and i've come to the conclusion having the reverse camera is pointless as it is always filthy along with the rear window. It seems that the moment there is any moisture on the road the car likes to smear it all over the rear.

Ive been considering some rear mud flaps but can't find any that will fit but has anyone else come up with an alternative solution?

Thanks

How often do you clean it?

Daily at the moment and only doing 20 or 30 miles a day. This morning I cleaned it before I left home and by the time I got to the office (5 miles) the camera was useless.

Surely the camera retracts and is only out when reverse is selected? How can it get dirty in the first place?

Nope. Camera is permanently exposed on the W212. It is hidden on the 213 though, at least the saloon.

As others have said, just a case of trying to keep it clean though pretty pointless in this weather.

I wonder if the retractable from a 213 can be retrofitted.

Same here, all but useless in this weather.
I've made a point of wiping the lens every morning but as you say it filthy by the time I get to work (15 mile commute) .I might try and give it a light spray with some cctv rainex solution to see if it repels the mucky water,.

I would very much doubt it without going into major expense. Totally different boot lids and housings. :(

The problem is with the camera being exposed is that, when in motion, most cars create a vortex around the back end which causes all the rain and road dirt to accumulate around the number plate area, consequently covering the small lens. The estate version is especially vulnerable to this effect purely due to dynamics.

I suppose some form of water repellent may help though personally I doubt it. Try half a potato, the starch in it works well in this respect and it's something we always used to carry with us years ago for if/when the wipers packed in. :)
