Hi,

I've been offered and am about to buy an interesting car, but could do with some advice please.

Car is a black/black 4,000 mile ex Sultan of Brunei SL73. Its apparently one of two RHD models he ordered within the total of 51 cars that he purchased.

Being ex SOB it has the 565bhp engine that was unique to his cars.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the value of this car please?

Thank you

With something as rare as this, the price is largely determined by what someone is willing to pay, rather than what is realistic.

That said, the last 73 sale I'm aware of was about £70k. RHD, no Sultanate provenance. There was one advertised last year for circa £170k, but no idea if or what it sold for.

Thank you. I've seen that ad, but I can't get my head around the price. Do you think that's in anyway realistic?

Car market has gone crazy though, so maybe it's right!

I'm no expert but a quick Google shows that Charles Ironside previously offered a Sultan of Brunei SL73 for sale - not sure when this was though. This was a 55,000 mile car offered at £69,950 :

MERCEDES SL 73 AMG 129-series, 7,300 5 Sp Auto 2 door Convertible, 1999V (1905) | Mercedes Dealer in Alton, Hampshire

Offer what you think it's worth. Job done with a bit luck and one happy camper into bargain! :thumb:

Bid already made and has been accepted. Exciting times!

I'm happy with whats being paid, but just wanted a second opinion from some other enthusiasts, so thank you all for taking the trouble to reply.

Car is based in a far flung land, so I've not seen it and am relying on a friend who has. I'm taking a fairly big punt as the car has stood for many years and now needs quite a bit of work and recommissioning which won't be cheap or easy.

I'll detail the story and the rebuild on here if anyone is interested.

Thanks BTB.

Its the massively varied prices that made me ask the question. Not sure I know of any other car with quote such a huge spread.

As Doodle said earlier, its worth what someone will pay and as there are so few, sellers are having a go and pushing the asking prices.

An SL73 SOLD for about 70k or something like that here in UK

I presume that was the Ironside car? That was a few years ago apparently, so prices have moved on a bit since.

As mentioned they are impossible to value really. Incredible cars and very rare, but an extremely limited market (dedicated R129 fans with huge amounts of spare cash!).

The Sultan's cars were badged as SL730, not SL73.
I believe there are two in existence but I've only ever seen one.
The Ironside one (V155 KGK) was offered at £39K then a couple of years later at the same dealer for £70K.
If it genuinely has 4,000 miles then it could be the other Sultan car but how did you come by it?

I wasn't aware of the 730 name. Do you have any web links that mention this?

Can never be 100% sure, but absolutely everything points to this being the other right hand drive car. Additionally only the Sultan would allow a car like this to fall into disrepair :fail

It would be a deeply impressive con if it turns out to be a fake!

A friend who sources unusual cars and who has some great contacts has unearthed it.
