RR Sport TDV8 vs ML V8 CDi

Probably doesn't help much....

Oh but it does; sometimes I have a car in mind what I want next (Maserati QP) but I do really need a big motor and it does really need to be 4x4 for a variety of reasons.

A TDV8 HST RR Sport is top of the list with the ML second, the wife is adamant that she wouldn't drive a FFRR but she said the same about a Q7...so I probably wont buy one, but it's good to have that to fall back on.

My 2009 ML320CDI has a light grey interior, is your car newer? Do the newer ML's only have dark interiors?

David

Mine is a 2010reg (2011MY), but in every ML I viewed I saw not one with a light interior, my CLS had a beautiful cream interior, I guess MB consider light interiors a no-no for a 4X4........

They're now on my radar as well, I've just sold the Q7 to the first person that viewed it, so my search becomes a little more intense....

So the 'short list' is... a RR Vogue SE TDV8 with rear entertainment (which seems a very common addition to that spec), an ML 420 CDI with AMG kit and then a RR Sport with the HST kit.

FFRR has the nicest interior, performance wise there isn't much in it between it and the Sport as I think the Sport actually weighs about the same if not more, dynamically the FFRR doesn't handle as well as the Sport it does have a bit more roll in the corners although the latest of the old shape ones addressed this.
I can't comment on the ML as the only one I've driven was a loan car 62 reg one so a newer model than the one you're considering, however I liked it and it handled well and had a nice, modern interior.
If you need any sort of off road ability then either of the RRs are the way to go.
Good luck though, it's not the best time of Year to be buying a 4x4.
What colour would you go for?, mine is Black however my first choice would have been Grey, it really suits the FFRR and RRS.

Me and the wife joke about our pathological hatred for grey vehicles and neither of is knows where it comes from!

I'm looking for either dark blue or black.

Grey is the best colour!!

I'll be using a new white GL over Xmas, I'll give my impression of that. It'll look awesome parked next to my white SL.

I'm such a tart.

It would be 50/50 which to drive out of those two, seriously.

Grey paintwork (as in *grey*, not greeny-grey or reddy-grey etc) should be banned from all cars and when I become president it'll be the first thing I outlaw.

Second will be Quorn 'sausages' and their other 'products'.

I used to love marinated quorn pieces, whack it in Miso soup with some noodles. Perfect.

But then they removed all the salt, so **** 'em!!

I think that looks stunning, I don't like Grey on a lot of cars but think it really suits the RR/RRS.

It's interesting that there is a genuine "open" quality to the posts - if this was on one of the Audi forums I made the mistake of joining the question would have been treated as an insult to all Audi drivers..

consequently I never let anyone driving an Audi out of a junction so I don't blame you for selling the Q7 - I'll be doing the same with my wife's TT soon.

I love RRs so can't give an unbiased view, my friend had a Vogue (the only RR I don't like) he sold it and bought a new Sport, which was pleasant enough but he just traded that for a FFRR and that is simply stunning. The performance is pretty good too.

My experience of MLs is limited to my days in NATO so unless you're buying a khaki green Mil spec one I can't help, although they really do go just about anywhere if you make them..

One of my suppliers recently visited me and proudly show off his brand new RangeRover.
I wanted to see the interior, he opened the door, and after I've admired its interior and complimented its quality, he proceeded to close the door lightly, and I said you didn't close properly, he did it again lightly, and he said it has soft shut doors, he eventually had to almost slam the door!

I think he was slightly embarassed :o

Don't get me wrong though, give me half a chance, I will want one myself!!

He's obviously encountered the errr soft closure saving device that, you know, errr saves on the errr amount of soft closes you can have...

Personally if either car is outside of the manufacturers warranty, I would go with MB and not the Range Rover Sport, as my colleague sells second hand RR Sports and other LR products and I never cease to be amazed at how unreliable they are as they get older. When something goes wrong its normally hideous and expensive and due to the design (or lack of) changing a turbo or even trying to change an EGR valve will have you in tears.

Hello

My dad has a RR TDv8 and I have his ML320Cdi.

The ML after my E class S211 I like, suits our needs, feels very safe. lots of nice extras also. Mpg 25 to 33, goes ok but then the S211 had the brabus D6 which I may fit to the ML. Quality wise its good in so much as no squeaks etc but the new price of my ML would have been £47K and I'm pretty sure I would not pay anything like that,

My dad wanted a new RR but waiting time of over a year (for a spec your own) he lives in Cheshire its pretty much the std car for any yummy mummy. So he settled for a pretty new 'old shape' while he decides.

It really does look lovely, inside and out with a sort if kit and huge chrome pipes at the rear. Inside it DOES feel special, makes the ML look very basic and plastic. Goes very well. best bit it can get 35mpg on a run. Dad loves it,

worse bit... you can now get the same looking car for around £10k or less (old petrol or high miles Tdv6) and the chavs are adding wheels that look daft etc...

I'm thinking about selling the C43 and using the proceeds to go towards the budget and buy an ML 63...

I still do like the idea of an ML 420 CDi Sport, but there's hardly any about with the AMG kit; I missed out on a very high-spec example about a week ago.

I really dont know why the ML420 isnt more popular... I think the engine suits the W164 so much better than the V6... Its got plenty of power and feels a lot more refined..

I think we have become a nation on bean counters...

I would like the ML420Cdi to be honest best of all worlds.

I just couldn't get my head round the fuel on the 63 as much as it must be fun, I'm currently averaging 24mpg and the fuel needle seems to move round the dial far too quickly. Two school drop offs in two parts of town then me to work doesn't help...

the 63 must be 15mpg doing similar? and 99% of the journey to be honest it could be a 1.0d under the bonnet...no chance of going anywhere quick.

The 420CDI engine is very refined, quiet and pulls like a train (even in our GL). Driven gently, it can get past 30mpg, but early 20's is more like it. It also likes to rev - whereas the 3.0V6 changes up at 4k or thereabouts, the 4.0V8 buzzes round to 4,400 with ease and by which time you are shifting pretty quickly too (my wife got the 'slow down' from plod on the A3 when she was making up ground to find a gap in traffic to exit...)

In the (lighter) ML it must be a hoot. I'm not a fan of the original RRS I'm afraid so can't comment on them (I do like the FF versions); both new RR variants are beautiful however, if out of my current reach.

Hold out for a well specc'd ML420.

At the minute a 2009 RR Sport TDV8 is leading the pack, I simply can't find an AMG kitted (ideally black) ML 420 CDI that's sensibly priced.

There's one on AT but he wants about £4k too much; a very similar car with massive spec (HK, factory rear TV's, auto tailgate close, digital freeview etc etc) was up at £14,500 and it took ages to sell, whereas the one that's there now is up at £18k...
