Hi,

I have a 2009 S-Class S320 CDI, W221.

I am having an intermittent issue with ABS and ESP is currently unavailable message. When I turn the ignition on, this message appears in the dash and sometimes speedometer reads 160mph.

I have taken it to multiple garages for diagnosis but they found no codes.

I am attaching the videos, hope someone knows what this is about.

+1 for it being a wheel sensor

Thank you very much for the replies. I'm pretty confident with DIY, would this be too hard to diagnose and replace at home?

Or low battery

I've checked the battery, it's fine. Issue seems to be happening more often on hot weather.

The live data needs to be checked to see what the issue is. I expect a wheel speed sensor or pick up ring.

Something really bizarre happened today. This was the first time these extra errors appeared.

All the usual ABS/ESP error
Plus parking brake error
Plus run flat sensor unavailable
Plus hydrolics of the steering didn't engage...

I'm really at a loss what could cause all of these things to throw error messages?
Could it be a bad battery?

Fully charge the battery and then go for a drive when you can.

I had something similar on a previous car and it was a weak battery.

+1 on the battery.
Mercedes don't like low voltage.
Put the battery on charge for at least 24hrs with a decent charger. No need to remove the battery from the car.

Is the current battery an old one? It may be failing completely. A load test will tell you if the battery needs replacing.

I had this on my E class. ABS, ESP, battery and the big tell was cruise control not working, but speed limiter was.
It turned out to be a rear wheel speed sensor ring.
Anyway, worth trying cruise and speed limiter when you gave a chance.

Until you get error codes read with Star it's anyones guess - but wheel speed sensor/ring or abs control module would be my guess. Need to read codes

Well you are saying you checked the battery, which one,the starter battery in the engine compartment, what about the battery behind the rear seat to get to that you have to remove trim from the boot, this is the battery that runs practically everything on you car,my car a late 2007 has one I am sure you car will have one too.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I checked the battery at the front. I don't think my version has a battery at the back. I've removed the trim in the back of the boot but there was no battery there.

With the quarantine I can't really drive the car too much to charge the battery properly. So thinking I might just buy a new one and replace.

Look at your battery terminals, they are usually date stamped, if 5yrs, then just get a new one. 👍

Ps look at Euro car parts for battery - search discount code.
Or
Grangemouth MB dive discount and deliver.
Or
Tanya batteries online.

Don’t buy a cheap battery - get a decent one it’ll pay in the long run

I've had a dodgy wheel speed sensor, I've seen most of the errors you've posted.

I had similar problems on dash display last week on testing battery it was showing only 37% of capacity so bought new battery and cured all faults. On another note I looked at battery prices on euro car parts and they quoted £370, 3 years ago a got one from Mercedes Glasgow £99 it lasted 3 years the battery I got on Saturday is from kwik fit at £177 with lifetime warranty..
