S2000 1, E63 nil....

I agree with this. Buying a second hand pair of crappy alloys for winter tyres just makes your car look rubbish for 4 months of the year - not an option for me. Buying a new set of 19s just for winter tyres would be silly money. Swapping tyres on and off my one set of 19s would be a huge ballache. So I've kept my usual wheels and tyres on for storm "Emmageddon" and apart from having to drive at 10mph in Comfort on a few journeys the C63 has been fine. If the road is snowclogged or totally iced up winter tyres wouldn't help anyway (you'd have been stranded on the M62 or M80 this week even if you'd had chains on). I think it has become one of things that people convince themselves they "need" and once they've convinced themselves of that then they do truly need it. Like Fitbits and aftershave. A marketing man's dream and a PR stunt as you say.
Have you got experience of driving with winter tyres?

Another problem we have is that people are not used to driving in snow or icy conditions. When I was younger, much younger, as soon as it snowed I would take the car out , find an empty bit or road and try and get the car sliding , skidding etc (well before ABS) and find out how it behaved, and how to drive in snow. My first car was an air cooled VW Beetle which was fantastic in snow, very little HP, skinny tyres and lots over weight over the top of them so plenty of grip. Huge fun in the snow unless it was so deep that the car grounded, but I did once manage a 360 spin and continued without coming to a halt, twitchy bum time though. I still test the ABS at the first frost of the year to feel out it reacts and remind myself how to deal with the car in those situations. As other people have said the biggest laugh are those in their FWDs with summer tyres totally bemused why it won't go up a hill with an inch of snow on it :)

Ive got a GLC with the all-weather tyres they Mercedes for free to stop the tyre clonk when turning.
Superb in the snow for the last few days :)

I have a set of 21" winter tyres for ML63 (W164 and W166 same size) Pirelli Scorpion snow and ice tyres, which if any one wants to make me an offer for ...

Think that's why I'm so convinced they are a waste of time and money.
For you, clearly. For others, they're not.

We have two cars in our household and neither will get to the main road from our house in snow without winter tyres. Not going to work is not an option, so one of them has winter tyres. Simple.

Fortunately I don't have to go to work anymore, and live in town so I can leave the car in the garage when it's bad. Had I still been working or living out in the hills (very close to the infamous A628 Woodhead pass) the previous VW Alltrack FWD would have had a second set of winter wheels and tyres. Generally the only thing that will stop you then is running out of ground clearance when the wheels are off the floor due to snow packed under the floor pan.

Took the car out today and winters aren't infallible that's for sure - had one nasty tail snap and a couple of instances where the car shuts down the power as it decided you are being stupid...

I haven't driven the car in a week and got a bit carried away with the loud pedal o_O

After plenty of prep work so the Merc got off the drive and up the virgin snow but it failed at an up slip road half a mile away on churned up slush on ice...short story got it back down and managed to get up a modest but long incline in Sport Traction mode... a BMW Z4 was stranded behind me...

Thought I'd try the S2000 with its Pirelli SottoZero's..

Flipping heck..felt like I could pull Land Rovers out of ditches...

I think I'll look at Rims and winter tyres for next winter for the Merc...
Shouldn't itbe winter tyres 1, summer tyres nil?

Why not just get a decent car like an Audi? This chap did: http://newsthump.com/2018/03/03/sno...te-driving-style-from-total-bell-end-to-****/

People convince themselves and that's it, job done.
The same guy who stores a complete set of wheels and tyres in his garage, ready for those 4 months is the same guy who fell for having his previous high mileage engine decoked using some very expensive machinery and process.
Each to their own i guess.
I lived in Canada for many years and drove exclusively on winter tyres - insurance insisted on it. But driving in dodgy weather in Canada is a way of life.
Over here it happens one or two days a year. Any longer and the country slides to a halt anyway.
If you're nervous over here in winter stick to front wheel drive.
