S211 Boot Squeaking

About two weeks ago I had the annual service of the car and I asked them to change the boot struts as well (which was at vast expense I may add) and ever since that service when I go down a bumpy road there is a squeaking / rubbing noise that sounds like it’s coming from the rear of the car. I have tried every combination of rear seat and parcel shelf to see if was them and it would appear it isn’t. So my question is could the boot strut replacement have misaligned the boot - and is this an easy fix. Also the car is going in on Friday to have a ball joint replaced under warranty, so can I expect them to realign the boot for free? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd get the garage to look at it if it's only started after they fitted new struts. One thing you could check; if the E is like the C, the tailgate has two adjustable buffers one each side, which adjust the "shut" of the tailgate and can be moved in or out with a Torx key.

Thanks for the reply, it is an e which seems to have the two adjustable ‘buffers’ as you call them. As the car is going in hopefully it will be a simple adjustment, if not I’ll have a go myself.

Have you tried putting someone in the boot , with the seats folded forward, to listen for the sound? And are you sure that it’s not the spare wheel moving because it’s not secure in the well?

Okay interesting - I tried every combination of seat up and down - it has the seven seat as well and thought it could be them or the parcel held but never had the chance to sit in the third row with someone else driving to hear exactly where noise was coming from will try if I get the chance. To be honest though (I know this is bad) the space saver still has the original tire on it from 2008 so if it’s never been moved would it suddenly start squeaking.

That’s for the idea

Mmm, my money’s on the third row.

I did have an E350 that had a really annoying squeak from the kids seats, that we spent ages trying to fix with padding and noise insulation before giving up in the end.

Good luck with tomorrow.

If it doesn’t work just find some chiselled whippet to climb in the back on his knees while you drive round a big car park or industrial estate one evening
