Have noticed that the car seems to take 15 mins or more to warm up. Not particularly cold here, 9/ 10 degrees.
According to the display, the coolant reaches 79/80 and the oil 90, and gets no higher.
Do these M177 engines run cooler or is there a lot of coolant to heat up ??
Thanks..

Does the coolant not eventually go above 80? If not then I suspect your thermostat may be playing up.

My thermostat did this on my E350 CDI. There is a rubber gasket in mine, which starts to degrade. A thin slither of the gasket started to split (although I caught it before it detached), and this slither was getting caught between the two metal sealing surfaces of the thermostat, meaning the stat was wedged open a tiny bit by the wayward rubber. This resulted in the same symptoms you have.

Might not be this of course, and no guarantee that the thermostats are the same design. But something to look at. If it's anything like the V6 setup, the stat is relatively accessible on the top front of the engine.

Coolant thermostat. The coolant should reach 90 degrees and stay there, and the oil about 95 degrees, or over 100 if you're giving the car some stick.

My gut feeling, it's because of the 2 stage oil pump, which does not squirt oil under the pistons unless around 3600rpm, whereas the traditional oil pump will constantly circulate oil flow regardless, so warms up much faster from cold.

The 2 stage oil pump is also installed in the M157. Can be switched off by unplugging a lead.

This is a 2 stage oil pump on a m157, its chain driven in this one. In principle, these new oil pump drive the engine with lower oil pressure to save fuel by reducing engine load.

Personally I don't like the idea of running engine in low oil pressures, prefer conventional oil pumps.

Cheers all.

I plugged in icarsoft and watched the water and oil temps: On a long idle it went up to 81 deg water (~88 on dash), 75 deg oil, then ran it at 70 mph and it immediately started to cool to around 62 deg water (~67 on dash), 65 deg oil. In 50 mph roadworks i saw 58 deg water, 62 deg oil.

Hopefully MB main dealer will fix it 🤞

Really appreciate the advice 👍
Funny old thing; that's exactly what both my old petrol E350 V6 back in the mists of time, and my OM642 CLS 350 did when I had this problem. Replacing the thermostat cured both. Every single one of my Mercedes (lots of them) in the last eleven years, including four with OM642s (almost forgot the S211 E350), has run a coolant temperature of between 85 and 90 degrees at all times except when the cooling thermostats were faulty.

Some additional info on the M157, two-stage oil pump and oil sensors.
Basically sensor unplugged to avoid the low oil pressure command from the ECU, which is there to save fuel (but risks the engine).
I don't know if this is the same for the M177.

No idea of the longevity of these 2 stage pumps. They are built slightly differently, they have veins inside, different to conventional oil pumps. The engine welcomes good pressures but there is no oil pressure gauge in these cars, so if the 2 stage oil pump fails there no warning.

M177 has two stage oil pump installed.

63motorsport now sell aftermarket oil pressure gauge, can be retrofitted via the oil filter cap option, which is easy DIY installation.

Thank you, safe travels..
Thanks , I just done a short journey, car hasn't been driven for weeks, in 30 mins oil temp only got to 60, coolant just hit 75, this was slow moving traffic with a few start stop interruptions. off later on a longer run so will report back if different

Same here, same symptoms... Please let me know what the MB specialist recommends. I believe mine (and yours - as others have advised) needs a thermostat but I've been advised otherwise by specialists so am curious what they tell you.

I have a long trip coming up at the weekend, 400 miles, so will keep a note and put the info up here. Perhaps we can compare next week, as Alps is also having a decent drive and likely to post his info too..

Took it out for a trip today to see.. coolant took 20 mins to reach 50* driving steady through town and 50 on the motorway. Average speed stuff. 30 mins to get to 80* and did reach 84* but stayed at 82* for most of the quicker journey home.
Oil heated up quicker,, 10 mins to 50*, 20 to 80* and stayed around 89*.

Not cold here today either, 10*.

Still seems slow and cool to me but not familiar with these engines yet. Long trip coming up on Sunday so will keep a watch on it..
