Advice please.
My Daughter has bought a 2014 B Class.
it has the screen but says the SatNav can’t be operated

Is it just a matter of fitting the memory stick or CD with the info?
thank you

It may have the socket in the glovebox for a Becker map pilot. I suggest she uses her phone, it’s far better.

You will need one of these, when I bought my B200 the Becker unit was missing, I think the dealers remove them and charge extra to refit.

Thanks for the reply.
where will I find this ot it’s connections so I can check please

Thanks

It's in the upper part of the glove compartment.

You can also run the VIN in an online VIN decoder and look for option 508 in the Datacard which will say "Preparation for Becker® MAP PILOT" or "NAVIBOX PREINSTALLATION" (the actual text may vary). If the car has this option, it will have the pre-wiring for a satnav.

My wife’s car has the Becker. Nothing wrong with it. Works as well as any other SatNav that I have come across.

My 2013 car (now sold) came with Audio20 and Becker Map Pilot, which I have used without an issue until I had the Audio20 upgraded to COMAND.

However, it's one thing using it if you already have it, but buying in 2022 a satnav designed in 2010 is another.

There's initial cost - around ~£150-£200 for eBay, and then the annual maps and speed cameras update which is another ~£90 a year.

There are simply better solutions out there both in terms of technology and price-for-value. The only thing that the Becker Map Pilot will have going for it is the originality factor and the full integration with the car's instrument cluster.

To be clear, I am not suggesting that the OP should under no circumstances buy a BMP unit, instead I am saying that simply buying the missing satnav shouldn't be the default go-to option - the OP would be well advised to consider all available options before making a decision.

We got the car in 2015. Never updated the maps & have never found ourselves lost.

Personally I’ve never seen the need to have the latest maps on my SatNav.

When I moved to OZ in 2008 we got a small TOMTOM unit. Did the 2 years of free updates. We used it while we travelled Australia, NewZealand, USA, Iceland, and also used it in the UK until we purchased the MB in 2015. Never found ourselves lost across 5 countries with 5 year old maps.

However, I take your point and if it was me, I’d get a bracket for my phone and use Waze or similar. I was only disputing someone’s statement that Becker was/is no good.

If you’re referring to my comment then you’re putting words in my mouth! I said that the phone option was, in my opinion, the better way to go.

Ooops apologies, that was not intentional. I have misconstrued your statement. Don’t lose sleep over it. :) ;)

I also agree with the car sat nav not being great, although have used it mostly when I had to, as i didn’t want to faf about with cables and connecting to Apple car Play. But over the last month or so, have used Waze via Apple Car Play, and have found it much much better then the car sat nav, so will continue using Waze going forward.

Never updating the maps may work fine in some areas of the UK.... but down here in Greater London it's a non-starter - the road layouts have changed every month in the past 3 years, with the gradual (and still ongoing) introduction of new low-traffic zones in residential areas, coupled with the addition of bus lanes and cycling lanes etc. Even Waze has difficulties catching-up sometimes, and I have already (twice) done a forbidden right-turn where it is no longer allowed when driving in the same routes that I've known for years (the sign was erected virtually overnight).

I think that we have become too reliant on SatNav. If you had not been expecting the SatNav to properly guide you, you’d most likely have spotted the signs.

How very true.

I am new to the Becker system. When living abroad I had a B class with Garmin maps via an SD card, quite convenient but the maps were not great. My early experiments with the Becker suggest the maps are better. I also agree that the maps on the iPhone do a great job but I prefer that method when my wife is in the car using it, whilst, if I am in the car on my own I find the built in system better. Should also add that I hate these clip on/stick on brackets. Good luck to the OP
