Hi all, 2012 W212. The Sat Nav, I have no idea which model is fitted but it's the original, is pretty much useless, I have absolutely no doubt that "operator trouble" will be a big part of this. When entering a destination it will calculate a route while telling me so. Route calculation completed the screen splits in 2, left side showing major roads only & the right side blank grey with an (direction?) arrow and the words "OFF GRID" Update required I assumed but the roads I am using have been around since Finn Mccool .. with the pot holes to prove it!
So what I am asking, I guess, is
(a) How do I find what Sat Nav system do I have?
(b) How do I go about updating?
(c) Anyone experienced this and will an update "cure" my dilemma
My registration is SCZ1008 if that is of any use. Thank you, in anticipation

You’re in Northern Ireland; the whole place is off grid!

Sorry, I can’t help for certain but here’s a video by our very own administrator Karl that gets you into the engineering menu for some systems of around that vintage.

Your car will have either COMAND NTG4 or COMAND Online NTG4.5.

If the main unit has a large PCMCIA slot under the on/off volume knob, right in the middle, then it's NTG4.

If the main units has a small SD-Card slot under the on/off volume knob, but not right in the middle, but slightly to the left, then it's NTG4.5.

Thank you for that info. The only slot (that I can find!) is for a CD Disc. Not sure what a PCMCIA is ... does it slide into the CD appature? Apologies, I am pathetic with dealing with technology.

Ok, confusion reigns I'm afraid, as per the photos I have neither of your two examples 🤯PXL_20241024_085259537.jpgPXL_20241024_085320204.jpg

Pretty sure that is Becker Map Pilot and to update it you either connect via cable to a laptop and update online(after buying the update from the Becker site) or you can buy an SD card to insert/update the unit. The unit you connect to in either method should be located inside the glove box.

Then you have Audio20, not COMAND.

The optional navigation module for Audio20 NTG4 is called Navigation20 or Navigation50.

The optional navigation module for Audio20 NTG4.5 is called Becker Map Pilot.

Right, why is life so complicated!
Just when I thought I was getting somewhere, although reading the update posts & info I was thinking way toooo many hoops to be jumping through! ... I discovered this (see photo) it was in a cubby hole under the passenger seat 🙄
So, Audio 50? .. update from Audio 20? From the very brief look through the book it's would appear that it requires CDs to update?? Which CDs??? Jeez, I hate technology!PXL_20241024_123315515.MP.jpg

Having totally fried what's left of my brain .. through extensive research using information kindly given on here, thanks all, my conclusions are that I am the (not so) proud owner of an Audio 50 unit, universally slated by everyone (accept Mercedes-Benz ... of course) as being totally crap .. Hey Ho .. the good news however is that it can be very easily updated by shoving a CD into it and downloading the latest maps .. whereby (hopefully) ending up with a slightly less crap sat-nav. Now all I need work out is which CD & where can I get one!
On another note, I bought a Chinese MMI Bluetooth 5.0 Auxiliary Adapter module, I can now stream Amazon Prime music from my phone. Quite proud of myself for that one 😛

A quick update. I got a CD disc off a really helpful guy on Ebay. The CD took about ½ hour to load .. after figuring out the correct sequence that is .. the end result is that I now have a very acceptable sat-nav, still a pain to program quickly & still doesn't accept the 7th letter of a post code .. Hey Ho
