Hi All. I have a 2014 E Class A207 with the standard NTG 4.5 screen. It has developed grey vertical lines covering the entire screen. The sound all still works, radio, mp3, phone etc, so I take it its just the screen that’s buggered! I was happy with it as it was, and don’t really need to upgrade, therefore I’d just like to buy a cheap second-hand replacement screen. My question is, do I need to re-code a second-hand screen whilst retaining the existing Command unit…..I’m just replacing the screen, nothing else? Thanks.

Sorry buddy just don’t know what the definitive answer to this is… I would have thought if it’s just the screen and not the whole unit, it might not need coding (to be perfectly honest I’m not sure which parts need coding when replacing now as I think even headlight units etc on at least the newer cars do need coding - but say just the bulbs I think not) … but I can’t be sure.

The screen can be replaced, however before buying a new screen, take out the current screen and make sure that the replacement screen has the exact same MB part number (format 'A 204 00 02 003').

Keep in mind that the fault you describe can also be the result of an issue with the wiring loom between the screen and the infotainment unit (i.e. the screen might actually be OK), and in some rarer cases also the result of a fault in the infotainment system itself (typically the onboard connector for the display).

Ahhhh, thank you both so much, I'll pull out the old screen and check all the wiring.

Cheers.

I believe you emailed me and I answered this for you.

Hi Alfie, yes, thank you so much. I think I placed my queries in a couple of places at the same time! Your advice was absolutely spot on. As a result of your advice, I did buy a second-hand screen from eBay and fitted it yesterday. Literally five minutes to fit, and worked instantly. For any others out there with a similar problem to mine.....ie, the screen comes on but is covered with grey and white vertical lines (but all sound functions still work), it's probably the screen that's gone. NO CODE is needed, just swap with an eBay item. Mine was only £35 and I picked it up from a guy fairly local to me. There are many for sale out there but as Alfie said, make sure you buy one with the same code number (mine was A2129002216), dead easy to check.....2minute job to access the screen and the number is printed on a paper tag affixed to the bottom of the screen unit.
