Hi all.
Four years ago I had a turbo failure on my 211. Now 77000km later I got a squeeking sound in the car when I accelerate. Sounded like a slipping fanbelt, but after changing the belt the sound was still present. Mechanic started to investigate, and found the noise to come from the turbo.
Should I expect MB to step up and at least share the bill this time?
Last time luckily my insurance took the majority of the cost.

The noise goes away when the oil is up to normal temperature or is there all the time ?

This is a common turbo failure noise along with whistling sound too.

At @ 48,000 over 4 years you will have to haggle with them methinks........

Noise is there all the time, but only above 1200-1400 rpm. and I put a little load on it. seems like it starts wben the boost pressure builds up.

Hi

I have seen swarf in the charge system pipes due to this problem, the compressor fan scrapes the housing.

Does seem premature failure wise but you can bet MB will wriggle of the hook somehow.

So do you think it is ok to use the car in this condition? or can I get metal shavings in the motor? I need the car on daily basis.

This sounds likely. Exhaust manifolds killing the turbos?

Just for my own self knowledge.....when you say manifolds killing the turbo...what happens in the manifolds to make this happen. Is it excess pressure?

Did your mechanic check for split inter cooler pipes? They will squeak under load and much more likely

Hi jaymanek.
I am not sure how he came to his conclusion, but he said it sounded like it came from around the variable vanes that varies the boost pressure. maybe you are on to something..
I'll give him a call and ask him.

Mechanic said noise comes from the variable boost mechanism. No crack or leak in the lines, and turbo spins truely with no slop.

This was aluminum swarf like from drilling you get a long thin curl of swarf, it was in the pre-intercoler pipe.

Hes correct the squeak comes from the Turbo its self.

However one trick is to use hairspray on the seals then connect the pipes.

E270 Owner... You lost me on the hairspray approach.. :-)
What would that do? and does it mean that I can use the car as it is until the MB workshop has determined what they will do with it? or will it do any serious damage to the turbo or motor?

Squeaking from charge system hoses can be reduced/stopped by spraying hairspray on the rubber seals,
it forms a sticky thin seal and makes the seal grip better, also putting a self tapping screw either side of the coupling,
it stops them from moving but i don't recommend either of the these as a permanent fix only to get you home
or for fault finding purposes.

Any squealing squeaking noise I have encountered on turbos meant replacement.

Hi again.
Turned out IT was a exhaust leak on cyl. 1 Pinscrew missing or broken.

So the squeak was an exhaust leak under charge pressure that's unusual for that engine unless previous work had been carried out,
usually the Fiat group 1.9 engines suffer from that problem, bolt pops out of the exhaust manifold causing a squeak noise on boost.

Glad you got it sorted :)
