Shell Go app. Advice please.

I don’t mind anyone studying my buying habits…they’ll be bored out of their skulls. I use a Santander credit card cos I get cash back on bills including petrol. And with two cars and a bike it adds up. Talking of bikes… the Shell app claims it’s quicker using the app than paying at the kiosk….but then app says don’t use mobile phones on the forecourt, so, to be safe bikes and apps don’t mix.
The risk from using mobile phones on forecourts is more about the risk of distraction associated with moving vehicles and dispensing flammable liquid, and less about the risk of “ignition”. Therefore if you’re sat on your bike with the engine switched-off then you’re unlikely to be picked up for it.

So you are not actually charged £1 for using the app then??
No it’s a processed to ensure the card is valid before authorising the pump. The £1 transaction is then cancelled once the purchase transaction is processed. You may have come across the same when reserving hotels or setting up a tab in a bar or restaurant.

No, not at all. When you select the pump and then select the amount you want to fill up by (it has various options like £10, £15, £20 or full tank) Shell must do some form of pre-authorisation check with your bank (similar to when you open a tab in a hotel). That's £1.

You then fill up and say spend £47.63, that amount is debited from your account but the £1 sits in pending for a few days. Doesn't actually get debited, and will eventually disappear. This is just what I've seen in my online banking after I've used Shell Go.

The instructions from Shell are to use the app on the phone while seated in the car.

After you've typed in the pump number and received the confirmation message saying that you can start refueling, there's nothing further that needs to be done on the mobile phone.

At this point you can put the phone down, then exit the car, fill-up, get back in and drive away - no need to touch the phone again.

So the phone does not need to be used outside the vehicle at any point.

I haven’t used the Shell app, but might start now after reading this thread.
I’ve got a weather proof handlebar mounted phone holder on my motorbike that has a fully transparent plastic screen on and is touch sensitive and works no problems without removing it from the holder. Could be an option? They’re not expensive, got mine off Amazon 👍

Well i go in and pay i don't want to pay for anything on my phone, but i realise i will have to change it as they are changing parking meters. But until then i will stand my ground, also they don't catch me buying things in the shop as once they have pulled my pants down for the price of V power on a fill up i just want to get away.

markjay have you gone start raving MAD !!! ? Asking some people to put their phone down and move more than a few feet away from it is sacrilege

I have memories of those tiny un manned petrol stations in France that bang 100 Euro on your card until the actual 13.67 Euro top up is validated. used to take days before it disappeared off your credit card.

I use it religiously, however it seems like the discounts are getting lower. After 10 stops I got an insulting/whopping £1 off.. and I've been filling up more than usual with ridiculously priced diesel V-Power.

I do very much like the whole avoiding human interaction thing, though.

I‘be just signed up for the Shell Go and Pay at the Pump, via the app. Not yet used it, so can someone please clarify the process, to save me fumbling at the pump and driving off without having paid.
My Assumption:
1) Arrive at pump
2) Open app
3) App asks for pump number
4) Put in pump No.
5) Confirm credit card
6) Fill up
7) Hang up nozzle
8) Drive off
Is this how it works? I’m not too sure how the final process between 7) and 8) works.
Thnx.

That’s strange, I get £3 off every tenth transaction plus other money off vouchers at various times.

Same here, I get £3 off every tenth visit, and on occasion either a voucher or some more money off. Though, I agree, that given the current price of fuel, it's peanuts... I use the app for the pay-at-pump convenience, not for the rewards.
