Shift Selector Problems

I've just started having shift problems with my automatic C250TD (722 transmission).

Recently it refused to start when in Park. I suspected the shift interlock immediately, shifted it to Neutral and it started. This only happened once.

However, a couple of times it has refused to notice that the shift is Reverse - and it stays in Neutral. As soon as I move from R to P and back to R, all is OK again.

I'm going on holiday shortly, and need advice!

Anyone had a similar problem? If the shift interlock fails suddenly, how do I start the car, e.g. shorting out some pins on the interlock assembly? You can PM me if the advice would help a thief!

Regards,

Tim

Are you sure it's a 722.4 transmission. That's the 4 speed not the five.
The two problems don't sound related.
The starter lockout is a switch on the side of the selector and the selection from N to R is mechanical.
Check out the switch and change the gearbox fluid whilst checking the linkage adjustment.

If the box is a 722.6 then the switch is part of the selector switch mechanism.

It's definitely the 5-speed. I presume all the bits you mention are accessible under the shift selector? I had the gearbox oil changed a few months ago. Mechanically it is behaving itself.
