Yep, the SL went in today for MoT, and then proceeded to slink home with her tail between her legs.

First fail in 10 years, got caught on the emissions. CO was fine @75-80 ppm, but CO was up to around 3%, with a lambda of 0.91-0.93.

I'm guessing the O2 sensor is dying, I'm pretty sure it's the original so has seen 17 years and 130k of use.

was it nice and hot, always give the car a good run before MOT..

The good old "Italian service", thrash it round the ring road a couple of times :).

Cheers,

Gaz

Yep, after the initial fail we took it out and thrashed it up and down the dual carriageway a few times to get it properly warm and tried again, but no joy (the figures above are from this 2nd attempt).

And just to add insult, MB have no O2 sensors in stock.

Looks like I'll have to go against learned advice and get a Bosch one from ECP (conveniently saving £100 in the process)

Marvellous. Now just have to work out how to get a not inconsiderable torso underneath a lowered SL to change it before booking another MoT.

Ill be interested to see if it does make that much difference... I wouldnt have thought an O2 sensor on a 1995 M119 would be doing all that much...
I know on one of my cars it was disconnected and made no difference at all.

Good question.

Since the last MoT it's had new dizzie caps, rotors and plug leads. The old leads were beyond serviceable so I can't believe the replacements have made matters worse (especially considering the car instantly felt much better for them)

The HC readings are good so the CAT appears to be still working, and the car is running nicely so there's no reason to suspect the ignition. Not really sure where else one can point the finger.

Change the oil and take the air filter out for the MOT. A tip that got one VW I had through its test from the garage that failed it initially and subsequently passed it.

Ta, but I'll pass on that for a multitude of reasons :thumb:
