My SL started misbehaving yesterday. It kept stalling when hot - pretty dangerous actually when it happens going into a bend and you lose power steering.

Ayway, I suspected the MAF so popped into my mates workshop , hooked the car up to his Star and sure enough the MAF was repeatedly showing an error.

Ordered the Bosch replayement from ECP (which rather impressively was delivered in 30 minutes), clear fault codes, stick new MAF in, check for any new fault codes, reset adaptive settings and I'm on my way within the hour.

Car feels like a different animal :thumb:

Much that I'm not a fan of all these fandangled electronics found in modern cars, If you have a star machine, it starts making a bit more sense.

could also be the crank position sensor spike.

I dont think so, the car started like clockwork regardless but ran rough and was stalling when hot.

Besides, no new fault codes since installing the new MAF so I'm hoping that has nailed it.

when you stay stalling, the car didnt cut out did it? If it did cut out altogether cant be the MAF i dont think.. in this case the CPS would be the culprit as Alps says...

yes, the car was running so rough when hot that it stalled.

Now you're worrying me, would the CPS not show any error in the diagnostic?

The *only* fault codes showing were for the MAF, an old stored code for a roof closing module and something I didnt really take notice of regarding the radio.

Spike, the CPS causes problems when the cars hot, not on initial startup when cold.

If the car is running perfectly now, then I think it is safe to say that you have fixed it...

:)

Well it is certainly running a great deal better but until I get stuck in traffic or get a chance to really rag the car and get it hot and bothered it might be a little premature to say with confidence that the problem is solved.

I'll have a better feel after my run home I guess.

I had no problems on startup when hot or cold. I only had rough running and stalling problems when hot - it never failed to start. if I had starting problems, like you I'd first assume CPS.

Don't mean to alarm you but a faulty cps doesn't always show up on star(especially if the car is pre 2003).I know this because mine went a few months ago & has been fine since :thumb:

I'm not alarmed as I had MAF errors anyway so even if I do end up having to do the CPS as well, replacing the MAF wont have been a waste of effort.

Will keep an eye on things - time will tell.
