Gentlemen, what think you to this?

Mercedes sl500 r230 7g 83600 miles swap | eBay

I'm seriously considering changing the XK for it, and as it's an M113 I have no qualms over the engine. Anything in particular I should ask the owner about when I contact him?

Looks nice, price is good. Do a carfax or whatever it is in the UK to make sure there's no story behind it (the cover up is worse than the crime) and if you're comfortable with your own assessment, go see it in person and do your inspection.

My, that is nice

Interior has a nice, modest balance of colour and wood (some can be too full of forest)
Waft with a bit of woosh as I saw one owner say of these while ago

I know it has ABC; I presume it will also have SBC? Either could be a potential source of significant bills at that mileage and age...

Looks really good, I would be very tempted even with the risk of one or two big bills to come!

Yes, SBC.

From memory the following had it:
Maybach
SLR McLaren
SL R230
E-Class W211

I always found it a bit bizarre that the Maybach had SBC but the S-Class, on which it was based, didn’t.

What’s in the stable at the minute? E63 and E500 with the XK?

Yep, but if you're looking at one of these then you've already factored that in. ABC is not that bad, I replaced all 4 accumulators in on my S55 and it only took a couple of hours. One hose let go so I took it to a hydraulic shop and had it remade for about $60. Including the hydraulic fluid I and filter, I don't think I have $1000 in it and the system has been very reliable.

The E500 went off up the road on Monday to its new owner, but I'm a huge fan of the n/a M113 with the 7g gearbox, hence my interest in this car. It will replace the XK if we can do a deal. Mind you, I was very surprised by how much the XK is worth according to Parker's; it would be a swap plus quite a lot of cash my way.

I may still buy this car anyway; it does look rather nice, though it is Schwarzgrun rather than Tanzanite, but that interior is spot-on for my taste.

My 2 pence worth......

1. ABC - Check all the struts and hydraulic pipes for leaks or misting, check the ABC fluid is green (not brown and definitely not black), check the ride height all round is even, check the ABC goes up and down smoothly (test multiple times).
2. SBC - not much you can check on this other than that the breaks work, also check that the hold function is working.
3. Roof - Check that the roof operates smoothly multiple times.
4. Water drains - Check all drains are clear and not blocked, particularly the drain in the passenger side air box under the bonnet vent and the 2 drains below the rear window. Wet/damp carpets on the passenger side indicates a blocked air box drain (this can cause multiple electrical issues), wet/damp carpet in the boot indicates possible blocked drains and/or leaking rubber boot seal (this will cause the boot floor to be wet and possible PSE pump failure. Whilst in the boot check the sponge around the PSE pump is dry.
5. Check everything electrical works.
6. Look for engine breather cover gasket leaks, if the gaskets are leaking the oil drips onto the exhaust manifolds. A relatively easy and cheap fix.
7. Make sure the wind deflector is included with the car, a replacement will cost about £300 to replace and is essential IMO.
8. Make sure the AMG badge on the boot is removable :D
9. At that age and mileage the ABC pump will be due a replacement so check if it has been done, check the usual services have been done and the spark plugs are not the originals!

Thank you for that; can't beat advice from someone who's been there and done that...

Much of it I'd do anyway, but the ABC fluid I'd not have thought of. I know about checking the carpets, though we've had so much dry weather recently, any dampness might have dried out. How do I get at the PSE pump to feel the sponge?

I might well not have thought of the wind deflector either. The AMG badge can probably stay; I know it's an eBay special, but I'm not bothered either way.

I happen to have a full set of brand new spark plugs for that engine.

If that one falls through, there's another really nice one, very similar including the price, but in my favourite blue, at Motorhub in Keighley. Maybe I should take a chance despite their reputation, but not until after I've sent £20K to this nice Nigerian prince who has emailed me...

The PSE is in the boot, on the offside under the spare wheel cover. You can't miss it!

+1 on the boot seals as the roof ECu is low down in there, also have been ia few & some have had the chirping? Well it was the roof joint rubbers moing slightly & they had gone a bit hard. Cured by apllying some of this ...

If this one falls through, and you can make the stretch, consider an SL55, for obvious reasons.

I have the E63 if I want to go really stupidly fast... I want a convertible with the n/a M113 and 7g box, and I like the SL's looks more than the CLK's. This one has pretty close to my ideal colour combination, too.

I spotted this one as well - a friend is looking for one. Seems good value. I tried to check MOT history on Gov website but it threw a wobbler at the reg. number. Could just have been a glitch. Suggest a quick recheck just to be sure.
