Isn't that just what all diesels do?... Chuck out black sh#t when you put your foot down?

Quite normal, I thought.

If its very bad then you need to look at the injectors.

Hmmm, injectors.. Could it be a result of the recent recalls of a diesel engine because of its injectors?
I was chatting to one of the guys at my MB the other day who said they were recalling particular diesel engined cars because of an injector fault.

Can't remember what engine he said it was though.

Usually heavy smoke is due to problems with boost pressure, leak or production(=split hose or turbo itself). One other possibility is intake manifold swirl flaps malfunction, but it usually does not cause truly black smoke (of course flap issue has minor relation with boost pressure).

Is there smell of the exhaust, whining or swooshing noise etc?

Fault codes could give some hints...
