Hello mates,

Finally managed to take my car to an indi MB garage. Problem was at 60-70 mph on the motorway, if I had to brake, the car would sort of shudder.

This was the fault

'we have inspected the vehicle and found the the o/s/f camber arm ball joint has got play and require replacement. The cost to replace this in round figures is £300.00 inclusive of VAT. Please let us know if you would like us to proceed with this.'

Yes, please

I hope they got it right

Sounds like good diagnosis. Ball joint wear is a common cause of shuddering under braking from speed. The arms should be replaced in pairs. Quality of the arms is important, I only use Lemforder.

I will ask about replacement in pairs
thanks TtM

Just spoke to the gal , replaced only one... would that be a problem?

no, as long as the other side is in good working order, always best to do in pairs if you have the cash.

The upside of replacing them in pairs is that you can forget about them. if the other side goes next week you are doing the job again. If the O/S has gone the N/S could be very close behind it.

Personally, I’m going to do all four on mine, they’re all the same age and mileage, so I’ll do them all, as the offside upper is leaking oil.

Did one only, had to collect the car, so no option
Strangely, they initially whatsapped me that the costs would be 300 quid
On arrival, was given an invoice for 473
Which was later rectified
Much better than what I used to get in Lincoln, thousands per visit

Balljoints are not a component I would feel the need to in pairs........especially if you have not owned the car from new and don't know when previous changes have been done.....it either has play or doesn't.....cant see the point of replacing one with no play....its like replacing a house light bulb because its old!! Its not like there are any cash savings to be made by doing both like there is when replacing a water pump when doing a cam belt.

Always in pairs for me, but then again, I do my cars myself, so I don’t have the extreme expense of paying someone else, just the cost of the parts.

Me too...but still can't see the point!

All the same age, so their days a probably numbered, besides, didn’t want to change just one, then a bit later another one and having to get the tracking done every time, it’s not the ball joint that’s gone on my car, it’s the bush has leaked all its oil out.
