I've had a similar issue. I would strongly recommend you don't turn on power again. Remove the AMP, open it up and check for any obvious dust/debris. If you do Find any, make sure to hover over the area with a vacuum and use a small soft paint brush or similar to remove dust. Then carful use of electrical contact cleaner.
I'm curious if you've had any battery issues leading up to your sound playing up?

I used to get this on my previous 2004/54 E55K.

Really annoying but I lived with it because the rest of the car was so good and it didn't happen all the time.

It wasn't all the time though but it seemed to do it more when the weather started to turn from warm to colder but not exclusively always the case.

Never did fix it though but I presumed it was an issue in the AGW (? - the amp amongsth other things).

Compressed air dusters are good for cleaning dust out of electrical gizmos. Make sure you hold can upright to avoid it spewing out propellant.

I use these air dusters to clean inside computer cases.
