E250 cdi estate 2013
As I have posted before will be changing my car when the PCP is up next year. So far I have narrowed the replacement down to a 350 cdi engine in an estate but I am still undecided on model and age. I do have a hankering after a V8 though. I drove a friend's SL 500 (2006 I think) and although it was very fast if you put your foot down the noise was rather underwhelming and when pootling about it made no noise at all. I think I could put up with 20mpg perhaps if the engine made a glorious noise and not just at very high revs ie burbling around slowly and a lovely V8 sound when accelerating . SO the question is what do I buy for the best soundtrack?

<<<<< Yeah, that!

Cheers,

Gaz

Thanks for that. Yes I would like a c63 estate but unfortunately unlikely to be able to afford one unless an early one is very cheap next October! Anyone know if the E55 sounds good inside the car?
(Sorry rereading the posts perhaps that comes under v8 amgs but are all e55 amgs?)

If you are asking whether all E55s are AMGs, then yes.

If you are asking whether all E55 AMGs are noisy inside, this is subjective.

Mine has the secondary CATs cut out and produces a nice V8 sound track but it isn't classic American V8 all the time. On full tilt, it sounds amazing. Personally, I would prefer it a bit louder but there is a limit as I hate drone.

I normally drive round with windows open in Summer so that I can hear it.

Without any mods, I think they are too quiet.

So cars like the SL 500 are not but ones referred to us 32,63. and 55 are all AMG but does that affect the noise they make? I assume you love yours to the extent that you are prepared to pay for the fuel it consumes.
I also have a Boxster and have the same problem with that as unless you are up around 4500rpm you don't get the wondeful engine noise. But otherwise as an everyday driver is it the sort of car that feels special on any trip??

I believe the AMG range have the exhausts tuned to produce a bit more noise as they are aimed at enthusiast drivers - a standard SL500 is deliberately made quieter as they are aiming for refinement.

My SLK rumbles gently when tootling around town - but get on the open road and boot it and it gets all shouty in very short order. Good with the roof up, even better with it down!

Having driven a C63 that also had a great soundtrack, not sure about the E55 as again it's probably aimed at a more refined audience, although having met some of the E55 drivers on the forum they appear to have the hooligan gene as much (perhaps more) than any of us! I guess with the E55K you probably get some supercharger whine as well, not something that I find particularly appealing in an engine note but I guess that's up to the individual.

Cheers,

Gaz

Saying that , my CLK430 , which while not an AMG , does have a V8

I have a CLK55 backbox on it , and Olly thought that something had been done to the pre cats. So tinkering can bring about the nice noise if you are prepared to.

It makes a lovely noise , and is louder than my pals CLK55 , but not intrusive at motorways speeds . I find myself indulging in low gear tunnel runs and traffic light GP's with myself just so i can listen to it.

You got it.

I do love mine enough to pay for the fuel it consumes, but I only do 8k a year. If I did 20k, I'd have to re-evaluate it.

However, my previous Saab 9-5 Aero HOT consumed the same amount of fuel and was alledgedly doing 29mpg. I consider this an 'ordinary car', but wasn't an 'ordinary' cost to run - so paying the same for twice the performance is easily done.

I find with my car, it always feels special to drive. In the first couple of months, I can only describe the experience as 'regal' whereas now it is special. They made a truly exceptional car, amongst others I've no doubt, it's just a shame they don't do good attitude and good customer service.

I think I read somewhere that the CLS AMG had a gruffer exhaust note than others, in OEM form?

For me, MB Tonbridge for servicing is excellent in all respects.

Both left and right exhaust pipes, including rear silencers and centre box
