With many forum members asking about spring compressors for Mercedes and the usual response being to use the excellent but very expensive Klann type tool Professional 5 Piece Spring Compressor for Mercedes on eBay (end time 18-Oct-10 19:52:00 BST) I was wondering if anyone has used this Sealey Coil Spring Reducer Clamp Sealey at £50 it begins to make sense for DIY/ one/off jobs in relation to current labour rates if its suitable. :dk:

Sykes Pickavant make a internal spring compressor but it doesn't list MB in the makes it caters for. I imagine its price would be quite high also? http://www.sykes-pickavant.com/Catalogue/tabid/140/language/en-GB/Default.aspx

There is no substitute for the proper type imho.

I had a spring break free and whistle past my head before deciding to buy the right type.

I have used the Klann tool and found it very safe and also made the job very easy .

I have , in the past , struggled with the external type ( also Sykes-Piquavant ) and felt they were not at all safe , as well as making the job very difficult due to not fitting easily around the springs when in situ .

The Sealy internal one does not look anywhere near as strong as the Klann one , but may be perfectly OK .

That is the one I have and perfectly safe. Not the SP one.

Sorry for being thick here Olly but do you mean the Sealey one is OK and up to the job?

I wonder if this would be up to the job?....

... only available in the States of course and unwilling to post abroad, imagine that lot coming apart and flying round the garage

Hmmmm, that sealey one looks fine to me! might have to invest in one and try it out!

I have just done the front coil spring on my W202 using the external type, never again without the proper Klann type tool it's just not worth the risk.

I'll probably have to do the W210 at some stage so happy to invest in one; this seller http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/US-PRO-Spring-Compressor-Mercedes-Fits-9cm-14cm-/270650197014?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3f04024416#ht_1602wt_1139 caught my eye as he has several one day sales for the Klann type although he doesn't mention the brand in the ad?

The other draw back is it doesn't do the rear springs on the W210?

Does the Klann do both front and back, no mention of exclusion on here http://www.klann-online.de/Englisch/Produkte/Kapitel_1_low.pdf

You dont need them for the back ones - quicker just to undo the inside of the arm and gently lower it with jack to free the spring.

One bolt, thats all.

that is correct (even with the spring compressor that bolt has to be undone and lower suspension arm lowered to get the spring out).

Does anybody know if this procedure would work fo a W210 estate?
