Spyware - how many :-0

I do spyware checks regularly.
I`ve had an issue on the lappy for a few weeks.
Called AOL helpline and they asked what spyware i was using - to which i replied "AOL`s own"
OK,he said - go to Lavasoft and download their "Personal" spyware and run that.
After running my first scan it detected 164 "new critical items"
So,also installed it on the desktop PC and 450 items were found
Now,some of these items were "non serious",but WTF was the AOL spyware doing then to miss all that lot?

I use 2 free versions of spyware removal/detection progs.
Lavasoft's Adaware and spybot S&D
Between these 2 and my anti-virus software not much gets through.
Another thing to do is avoid using IE and use firefox as your web browser.
Many attacks are aimed at IE as it is predominately the most widely used browser.
