Hi, could anyone help out? I have had crunching and now something has snapped in the steering column causing the telephone, paddles and volume controls to fail along with accessing the Command system. I have taken my car to the garage to be told this is not unusual with my car (E220 Cabrio 2014) and that it is the steering ribbon which has gotten caught in the mechanism and snapped. They initially thought they could replace the ribbon and I've now been told it has to be the whole unit at a cost of supply, fit and coding of almost £600! Does anyone know if this is the case or if the part can actually be replaced without the whole unit? Any advice on garages or cost would be helpful. Many thanks

It will be the clock spring that has failed. The answer is a new unit that may need SCN coding on star diagnostic. There may be some second hand ones out there to save you some money.

Hi that’s what the garage told me about the unit. They said they had looked for a second hand unit to take the ribbon off it, but couldn’t get one. I appreciate your advice and get looking myself. Thanks again

Whats your VIN, I'll look up the correct part number. Theres loads of different ones based on the options (including if you have lane assist as there is extra wiring if you do)

Disconnect the battery before changing it your you'll get an airbag light. And when you take the steering wheel off, take a photo down the bolt hole before you remove the wheel to see the alignment marks for when you put it back.

Also, be aware of used ones from scrap cars, if the airbag has gone off often they are scrap as the thin wires in the spiral for the airbag melt under the current of triggering the airbag.

You also need / meant-to-have a little lock clip that holds the connector in place (its a seal, so breaks when you take the old one off). Its pennies, but can't remember the part number.
