2003 CLK 240
Hi All,

So, long story short; I have been having problems with the gearbox on my CLK 240 (2003), which was originally diagnosed as glycol in the oil due to a faulty Valeo radiator. It went back to where I bought it and after 3 weeks I finally got it back, they had apparently changed the radiator and had flushed the box.

Anyway on the drive home the bottom hose popped off and I lost all coolant, but managed to nurse it back to them before it fried. They had it for another week and reckoned they had fixed the problem, well they hadn't as the bottom side of the housing was broken; however as a temporary fix I have secured the clip that holds the hose into the housing with copper wire and a jubilee clip (it's going nowhere now).

All seemed fine for the first couple of days and then I was getting quite a severe clunk when the box went from 1st to 2nd and again when coming out of 2nd to 1st when stopping.

I dipped the box and the oil was horrible and still contaminated, so I sent her into a well known Indy in Glasgow for a full flush of box and TC.

Picked her up and paid 265 notes to find out that there was absolutely no difference and in-fact was told they had only replaced 5 litres from the pan and that there was no way to get the rest out of the TC. I did tell him he was talking s@&t.

So, I decided to take on the job myself and have reviewed all the excellent advice on here especially the diy step by step thread. Bought everything I needed, Fuchs 236.14, gasket, filter, banjo bolt etc.

Got the job done today, but well; I have to admit there is no difference at all. I done a full 14 Litre flush, but when I dipped the box the oil was beautiful red, but there were still some bits of white contamination. :wallbash:

Now, unless the box is totally trashed and beyond repair, I think the radiator might still be the problem, as I'm not convinced it is either new or that if it was a replacement, then it too may have been goosed.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Apologies for the long thread, but believe me, that was the short version of events.

Hello and welcome, I think you should be giving the selling garage the problem, best to not tell them what else you've done and get them to fix it or read up on how to reject it which will be a challenge on a 12 year old car. I wouldn't hang around, drop it off tomorrow, if they exchange the gearbox for a secondhand replacement that would solve things for you me thinks. They are on eBay for £400 plus fitting but check for glycol. All the best.
