On my desktop PC (running Vista home basic) everything has been running fine for some time, but recently it started acting up.

Sometimes it wont boot up properly, instead it just displays a boot screen, but this doesnt happen to often, but the main problem is that it can boot up all by itself. it never reboots when already running, but it can start up at any time after being shut down.

I realise that a clean install maybe necessary, but any ideas what is causing this?

PC is hardwired to router.

Run a couple of antivirus's & adaware's if no luck try a restore point.

..if still no joy call the ghostbusters

Any schuled tasks such as anti-virus updates or disk defragmentation set to wake up the PC in order to run?

Check Task Scheduler, but also your anti-virus programes etc for such options.

Sounds like a jammed/dusty/dodgy power button on the PC case....

Do you have a network cable attached to it?
If so go in to the bios and switch off wake fom LAN.
