Strange Noise

Yet again I require the expert opinion of the chaps in here. I think my car is feeling the mileage and is throwing problems all over the place. After my problems with a "exploding noise" which turned out to be water in the ignition coils (thank you to Dieselman and Grober) I had yet another problem on the M4 when my fan belt was shredded to pieces (I found out that the water pump had disintegrated).

Anyway the car is on the road but I can hear (louder first thing in the morning) yet another noise. I sounds like, well a tap the same sort of noise you would make if you tapped with a finger the body work. It is not a tappet noise and it cannot be heard from the engine bay. I can only hear it from the inside.

I went to a local garage and he seemed a bit confused. The noise is very light the car gets war but very pronounced in the morning (when car is cold). I sounds like it is coming somewhere near the passenger footwell/just below the gear lever).

The mechanic mentioned that it sounded like something was touching the bodywork (but I am not convinced) Any ideas? (Please I will shut up after this)

I think the mechanic is right and wonder if the purge valve is causing a vacuum, fume or fuel line to pulse, thus tapping the body.
