Strange Transmission Issue

Driving my E270 CDI earlier and wondered why car was hanging in gear around 2300 revs. Realised it was stuck in gear and the part of the display showing whether it's in drive or reverse was clear and the part showing c or s mode was also empty. Pulled into a car park and tried to move selector from drive to park no joy and a big clunk. Turned engine off, back into park, turned back on and all back to normal for next two hours.

Is this likely sign something is going wrong with the gearbox or possibly a sensor issue etc. ?

Most probably the speed conductor plate, the five speed box is pretty bullet proof but does need servicing. Has yours ever been serviced ?

Had fluid and filter change 40,000 miles ago when I bought it. It's going in for thermostat change so can ask them to check. Hope speed conductor plate not too expensive if it needs that!

Most likely a 722.6 transmission . Literally millions of them out there fitted in all sorts of cars , vans, trucks and buses in one form or another , spares readily available as is information online . A quick Google will show you service kits available.

One issue is the (cheap to replace) TCU plug leaking fluid up through the wires and into the connector plugs in the transmission ECU in the passenger footwell. Thats an easy one to check for.

Sounds like it's in limp home mode - locked in 3rd (usually) gear, so no reverse. As mentioned the conductor plate is a common problem but not crazy expensive to fix. Had this done on my SL in 2007 ... back then it was £115 for the part and £150 labour. I was also able to clear it by turning off and back on so lived with it for a while until it became more frequent. Any dealer or decent independent will read the fault codes and tell you what's up.
