Before Christmas my mother died (this is not about her) and when I mentioned it on Facebook I was taken aback by quite how many friends from all over posted that they were sorry for my loss. Previously I had been a bit sceptical of what I considered (in a rather arrogant way) formulaic responses, but I found they helped immensely. So I resolved this year to put more effort into politeness as little acts of kindness and politeness can matter a lot.

So, in that spirit, I wanted to start the year with a big thank you to so many people here who make this place what is. Those who make it possible and those who spend their free time moderating and administering it - Koolvin, Killerhertz and Druk spring instantly to mind. I sometimes bend your ear but it is because I think this place is special. Thank you for all your time and your patience and your hard work.

Then thanks to our forum sponsors who pay towards keeping this place alive and who spend their time offering assistance, help and in numerous cases putting on great events that take a lot of time, effort and money. I know how busy people can be who run workshops, and I know how hard they work. I also know that they are human and sometimes make mistakes. But a big thank you to Olly, and Terry at Wayne Gates, Jaymanek, Richard and Alfie and all the guys like Acid and others in the Performance section. If I missed you, my apologies. Thank you anyway.

Thanks to all those who go out of their way (sometimes literally) to help. Grober, Carat3.6, Neilrr, Bellow, Druk, Bruce, Bolide and many others. You have been a great help to me and numerous other members and frankly without you this place would be greatly diminished. Thank you also to people like Trapperjohn and all the others who go out of their way to welcome new members.

Thank you to those who thank others for their help. It may seem silly, but when I provide (normally not great) answers, having a thank you makes it somehow more satisfying having made the attempt. Thank you also to those who participated in my project thread, simply in most cases by showing interest. It did, at numerous times, make a difficult project more bearable.

Finally thank you to all who make this place civilised and friendly. Moderation isn't just external and respect for others right to express opinions, even if different from your own, is a vital part of making this forum and society work. I have a very sharp tongue but try to keep it under control.

Thank you all and happy Benz bodging and Mercedes motoring in 2017!

What a great post Charles. Very meaningful and heartfelt. Happy New Year to you.

Ant.

Happy new year to you too Charles, well said and sorry to hear of your loss.

Happy New Year Charles - and I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

Being the first I'd ever joined, I never appreciated how good this forum really was until I joined others and even though I don't currently own a Mercedes, I still class this place as "home".

I've made some good friends through here as well, some great people, not to mention my vocabulary has expanded enormously too.

It really is hard to put into words how lightly (self?) moderated this forum is judging by my experiences with others and I think the freedom to discuss and challenge opinions is what makes this such a great place.

not to mention my vocabulary has expanded enormously too.

It's gone up by Maserati and vexatious. Give it another 100 years and you'll not be far off in total what Mocas would use in a sentence...(he is alive and well and terrorised my neighbours in his hooligan AMG the other day).

Sorry for your loss Charles.

Fine words written above.

I could live to be a thousand years old and not be anywhere near his vocabulary!

I did learn a lot from him and I do miss his presence on the forum.

I would like to echo the thanks , and indeed the reasons for them as put so eloquently by Charles.

The breadth of knowledge, skills and vision exhibited by the members overall and, more importantly the willingness to help each other, sometimes to extraordinary lengths is an exemplar as to how any Forum, motoring or otherwise should operate.

who else is going to listen to the rants and ravings of such a bunch of n'er-do-wells? :D

Your psychiatric social worker? :p

Sorry for your loss CM.

Intrigued by Brendan as an AMG terrorist also.

Well said Charles, and please accept my condolences for your mum's passing.

Sincere condolences, and what fine words, I'd second the thanks to all involved making this forum work, and the knowledge and help offered to 'strangers' it does make the world a little better doesn't it :)

Just brilliant Charles-just like this forum and all the great contributors to it that make it what it is.

Charles, so sorry to hear your news.

With respect to your comments on our forum ...perfectly put :thumb:

This really is the best forum I've ever been part of. It has a special stickiness and genuine sense of camaraderie that makes it unique in my experience.

Charles Hi

Very sorry to hear of your loss and please accept my deepest sympathy. An excellent post about this Forum too.

With best wishes for a Happy New Year.

Mike
