Hi

I was in the middle of getting a floor of an old house i am renovating ready for concrete tomorrow morning and wife phones and says she cant get the car (W124) started and was walking to the school to collect them. Knowing that the battery was on its last legs for ages i suspected the battery. Phoned local battery place and yes you have guessed it they were closed cos it is 4pm on a Friday:eek: Phoned MB Commercial and they had a 74Ah battery so i started the car with jump leads and sent wifey and 5 kids off to get a new battery. While starting i noticed that the battery light didnt come on, put a volt meter on battery and sure enough she wasnt charging. Knowing that the battery was on its way out i sent her on to get a new one. Tried MB for a regulator/brush pack for alternator but no joy. By this stage everywhere is closed for the weekend. I am leaving for Ukraine on Monday morning for 2 weeks and was thinking that she could charge the battery the odd time with the charger until i got back because the 124 diesels dont need a lot of current to run.
Decide to pull the regulator while new battery was on the charger hoping to stretch the springs on the brushes. 5 mins had it off the car even in the good clothes!! noticed a dry joint going to the brush, solder it up pop it back in and hey presto i have a battery light again and once fired up she is charging.

She now has new battery and charging fine. Wife happy and i am happy goig away on Monday and knowing car is good.

Funny how it worked out ok in the end.

Only downside is we didnt get out for our 10th wedding anniversary:mad:

Oh and concrete is coming for the floor at 11am in the morning and i have screeds 50% set, an hour in the morning and i will be ready.

The 124's dont you just love them. Not starting at 3.30pm. A star screwdriver, soldering iron and a 13mm spanner was all that was needed to change battery and repair alternator. Somehow i dont think it would be as simple with a 211.

Hope i havent bored you all. Oh and i havent proof read any of the above:D

Q. Screeds do you mean formwork?

Screeds are boards laid to the finished level that we use to level and tamp the concrete to. Once the concrete is in and levelled the screeds are removed and the void they leave is filled with concrete. No formwork needed, the walls do that.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/screeds Thought it was maybe a local word but hey its not.LOL

Cheers:)

Watercooled alternator on the 211 - and they fail - and they cost about 600 quid ouch.
