22 grown men prancing around after a ball? It will never catch on.

So never mind the World Cup this weekend, here is a seminal event.

Audi are going for it this year bigtime with the R10: first ever manufacturer to enter a Diesel. In fact a V12 turbo diesel.

Pah, the Petrolheads snorted, more marketing nonsense to flog 1.8TDi shopping cars. Never work because to pander to the Green lobby they fitted particle filters. A 2000 rpm power band: 3000 to a miserable 5000 rpm? Bwahahahahahah!

But after final qualifying last night the the front row is occupied by, lo and behold, No 7 & No 8: the two Audi R10 TDi's. 650 bhp not to be sneered at but the 1100Nm of Torque did the business.

Vorsprung durch Technik indeed

Think they've been taken fairly seriously since they won at Sebring in March (their first ever race), having also taken pole there!

Satch, you're a true Dieselhead. :)

Is there any TV coverage? Certainly none I can see for Freeview tomorrow.

Looking forward to LeMans again, some proper sport for a change. I have promised myself I'd go one year, but just never got around to it.

If you are are cabled up it is on NTL channel 173

<is desperate>

Yes that's what I've been using. It's going to b another diesel trouncer isn't it...

And you'll be pleased to see I can now be bothered to spell "desperate" right ;).

Audi TDi came in 1st and 3rd and before anyone thinks this is because it's an endurance race, Alan McNish set the fastest lap of the race and the other Audi being second fastest.

Forget the old jokes about the smoke screen there isn't any, well only from the petrol cars that blew up. :D :)

Brilliant performance by Audi and the drivers.

Next year, when Peugeot will also be running a new diesel, the powers that be are definitely going to apply restrictions to the diesel variants. The extra torque, economy and reliability are apparently seen currently as unfair advantages in the racing world, whereas out in the real world there are still folk labouring under the illusion that diesels are noisy and slow... :(

full credit must go to audi for winning the last 7 races on the trot (i am including the Bentley/Audi ;) - i think this beats ferrari and equals porsche) although from what I gather they were given a bit of a leash this year with the rules in favour of somebody willing to give derv a go.

think its a shame they're so quiet - i sit in maison blanc whenever i go (classic's turn this year) and the sound of 40 odd cars accelerating up the start/finish straight is memorable - would be a shame if it was a muted burble with a bit of tyre squeal!

Saw this waiting for the Chunnel train last Thurs.
There was plenty of exotica getting on the train on the way down to Le Mans.
I thought about telling the owner he should of bought a silver one........
