Looking at the moment
Hi folks,

My W203 is on its last legs and I am in the market for a replacement. My top budget is max £14K and my needs are 1) family car so 4 -5 doors 2) petrol as we mostly do low mileage city driving 3) automatic as the Mrs can't drive stick, 4)under 10 years and 50K miles to reduce wear and tear and 5) full service history. I've seen a couple of 2014 - 2016 C200 W205s that tick all these boxes and would be grateful for thoughts on the reliability of the model, engine types to watch out, questions to ask the dealers for etc. Here's one of the examples I am looking at C200 on AutoTrader, for references. I am also very open to alternative suggestions within my price range. Thank you so much!

I've had a couple of W205s - a C200 Sport saloon (petrol) & a C220AMG Line estate (diesel). Liked them both & both were reliable & comfortable & the performance of the C220 was surprisingly sporty!. There is also the C250 (same engine I believe but tuned differently) that offers a small improvement over the 220. On a personal level, I'd ALWAYS go for something with the AMG Line option which offers a far better looking car than the rest & provides far more in the way of "whistles & bells".

The pre-facelift W205 C200 has the M274 2.0L petrol engine, it's a fine engine with no particular issues.

In the application of the M274 (1600cc) on the W204, the thermostat could be an expensive issue if it failed due to its placement ...I'm not sure if the application on the W205 improved on that?

I don't actually know, but I am assuming (hoping) that the issue was resolved for the later engines.
