Yes, you are quite right that dealers ask for photo ID now but I bet not all parts guys are so vigilant. I bet if you just kept trying different dealers, you would find one that will make you up the key with no questions.
How closely did the parts guy inspect the ID I wonder? Everyone knows what a UK passport is like but what if you showed one from say....Estonia, would you be able to spot a forged foreign passport? I know I wouldn’t.

) ...almost a criminal mind if you like. All I can say is that I spent many years "in the field" watching these kinds of toe rags before a major career change and along the way I have learnt a great many scams that are done. Some I kinda thought were rather ingenious and others I despised.
Here's a sly one for instance...
You break down, no breakdown cover what do you do? (Not you but your alter-ego perhaps)
Get hold of a copy of a local telephone book from a pub or whatever and start ringing people at random from the book pretending to be a sales man selling ....you guessed it Breakdown cover for one of the main organisations.
After less than five calls (I guarantee) you will get hold of someone that says "but I already have a policy with you” To which you say "Oh, I am terribly sorry sir/madam there must be a problem with our records - I can’t seem to find your policy on our system...." [clickety clickety keyboard noises] "Do you have a policy number to hand so I can try and track down your policy and amend our records, we wouldn’t want you to end up stranded without any cover would we?"
The rest of the story is obvious.
Perhaps I am giving people bad ideas but on the other hand, the next time a salesman calls, you'll think twice before giving out any information wont you?
