Timing Chain

The engine light has come on on my 2008 C180 Auto. There is 100,000 mile on the clock.
The garage has told me that I need a new timing chain.
I was under the impression that as it was a timing chain and not a belt it did not have to be changed.
They are also saying that the 2 gears might be damaged an might have to be replaced.
I am due to drop the car in on Monday so any advice in advance would be great.

Thanks.

They will be correct and you have been lucky it went so long.

Has this changes as my last car was 2003 C180 with 220,000 on it and I never changes it.

Later engines have single row chains made of butter.

If you have M271 it may be true, other engines are very reliable what comes to timing chain. Possible cam shaft/ crank shaft sync error could be due to sensor fail too.

Sometimes Balance shaft if causing troubles but I'm not familiar which engine types are prone to fail.

Ok thanks for the info, I just wanted to make sure it needed to be changed.
Many thanks.

my w202 (C250TD) is at 598,000 km and i haven't changed the chain yet. my garage man seems to think i don't need to . . .

Your car has an OM605 engine, not the M271 the O/p's car has.

Thise M271 engines can wear teeth too so your garage will need to check for this.

dieselman you learned person can you enlighten me as to whether I have a weak timing chain that needs replacing , car is 2000 e 320 cdi?

No you haven't. Eventually it will stretch, which can be measured by setting the cam to TDC and check the degrees of stretch on the crank indicator. 5 deg is the limit.

So, with 30k on my m271 engine, other than regular oil changes, how can I prolong the life of my timing chain and gears?

Fit a new chain before it wears the sprockets.

Does this timing chain problem/issue apply to OM642 V6 engines?

Our local MB specialest checks the chains on every service once the car has crossed 40k . The sprockets are over 700 euro each .
