I got the 500 go for crimbo and I've been very happy with. It synchs with both my SE750i and Motorola V525 quite happily. The bluetooth is great - unless you can't switch the unit on - which happened this afternoon. It will not switch on at all.

Have tried powering through the car socket and via the mains in the house. Green light comes on but that's it.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so any ideas? If I try pressing the reset - will that wipe the speed camera database and other bits - like my phone book etc?

The unit is only 3 weeks old so I will take it back to Dixons if necessary :(

Typical innit though - am travelling to Newcastle for a couple of days tomorrow and had a teleconf booked for the afternoon coz I an use the TTG - not now I can't  unless someone has a magic cure :p

Have you tried connecting to your pc and can your pc see it?
Did you back it up when you first got it, and I dont mean with the program that comes with it but copying the sd card to your pc?

Sorry to hear you have troubles with your TomTom. I believe the green light only indicates that the unit is receiving external power it doesn't indicate if the unit is switched off or on.

Could the button in the outer bezel become misaligned? You might want to try removing the outer silver bezel, checking the power button underneath then reseating the silver frame / bezel.

To remove silver frame:

- look at the mounting circle at the bottom of the unit and locate the part of the circle at the back that moves to lock the TomTom to the mounting bracket.

- push this lock forwards such that you are pushing in the reverse direction of the release key on the front of the unit. Doing this will lift the silver frame away from the body of the unit.

- you can then use your finger nails to prise the rest of the silver bezel away from the Tomtom and have a look see underneath.

Guess who bought a black frame for his TomTom at Christmas :p :D

Haven't done that - are you getting at the the until might be working but it's the screen that's buggered?

Yes I did ;)

Steve - pressing the button feels like it's OK. Isn't at all out of line. Hasn't bee dropped or anything like that.

As it's still new I'm loathe to do too much to it - Id rather just get it swapped out. I couldn't find anything about it on Pocketgpsworld so I can only assume it's not a common problem :(

I have reset my TTG 700 (only once so far) and did not lose anything. Read on another forum that switching the unit off whilst it is still route planning is a favourite cause of the thing to freeze up

Is the unit charged up, not sure it requires a min charge in it even with the mains plugged in

yup - it has at least 50% charge prob nearer 75%. Wasn't switched off during route calc.

I'll try a reset and see what that does - if anything.

Watch this space! ;)

Panic over. Reset has done the jobby nicely. Hasn't lost any stuff except 2 hours 45 minutes in time

Won't worry about hitting reset in the future.

Thanks chaps :D :D

Well done nothing worse than treading in the unknown. And they say technology makes your life easier, until it goes wrong. :bannana: :bannana:

Yes I am much relieved :D I prefer to err on the side of caution where technology is concerned as I once lost a camera full of wonderful pic's by being a tad over confident!! Once bitten and all that ;)

I do love the new TTG. Hubby has TTG - the first generation and it's great as a sat nav - but the 500/700 with bluetooth takes them to a different league

I am thinking of getting a fixed dock for Edna - so I can link the screen colours to the headlights etc. Maybe later in the year. Need to be saving the pennies atm due to house move n stuff.

Does anyone know if you can set the 500 to receive voice dial commands? I think that's my only gripe atm. To dial out getting the number is a tad clumsy and if with just a couplke of taps I could use voice command that would be terrific

Apparently it's not unheard of for the tomtom units to freeze - although mine hasn't done it for about six months it froze a couple of times before that.

If you get bored with the colour schemes, you may want to try this
http://www.colorschemeeditor.com/index.php?lang=EN - My day one is (almost) the same colour scheme as a normal road atlas.
