Trolley Jack recommendations

W212
It wont be long before I swap my summer wheels to winters. Last year I used the jack that comes with the car. This time I am planning to use something more substantial.

I bought a jack pad to fit the slot on the w212 but at a diameter of 67mm means not every saddle will accommodate it.

Any suggestions on a suitable trolley jack?

Halfords own brand trolley jacks are good for DIY. Always aim for heavier than you require and, as always, please do remain safe at all times.

We had another fatality here a few weeks ago. Tragic. A young father and spare time mechanic, found, by his wife, crushed under their Audi. It now appears that he had finished the job he set out to do, but left a spanner under the car and attempted to retrieve it, having just removed the axle stands. At the inquest it was mentioned several times how this chap was always careful and always telling others to be so. This does appear to have been the result of a last moment impulse.

As brucemillar said, always try to go heavier than you think. For example, the SGS 2 ton jack if fine for lifting a car to change the wheel but I wouldn't go under it whereas the 3 ton jack would lift both sides comfortably. SGS do a good deal on jacks and stands together.

Hi,
I bought the Sealey 1153CXHV 3 tonne jack, which came 2nd on the group test quoted above, earlier this year.
The jack is great -- very solid, heavy and works very well.

I also bought an aluminium jack pad which fits into the Sealey jack perfectly.
Here is the link to the jack block:-

With the block fitted it raises the profile of the jack. It just fits nicely under the jacking point of my S212 (and W204) but both of mine are the standard height cars (not the Sport model which is slightly lower).

I have a Clarke Strong Arm 2 Tonne, must be 7/8 years old and still working fine. I also have a decent set of ratchet axle stands and the correct jacking pad. They don't get a lot of use these days but at least they keep my MIG welder, Compressor and Karcher company on dark winter nights.

Looks like a front-run for me :)

When I jack up the car using a new trolley jack, where do I place an axle stand?

You would have to put the trolley jack under the diff to raise the rear and there is usually across member at the front.

I've found a rubber rectangle at the front. I'm less confident about jacking from the diff correctly

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago.
Execellent with dual pistons which raises car quicker.

I've had a couple of those. They're your basic 1.5 ton Chinese aluminum jack sold over here by places like Harbor Freight (not sure if you have this business in the UK). It was OK for may MGB but did will blow seals pretty quickly if used on larger German cars. Spend a little more and get a 3 or 3.5 ton jack which will last years instead of weeks.
