hi im new to mb club, bought my first mb about a month ago c220 and im very pleased with it, just after abit of advice on a tunning box for it or if anyone recommends a remap instead of the tunning box any pros and cons for them both?? Thanks

I believe consensus is a really good tuning box works well but there are plenty of poor ones out there. Probably your best bet is to try Celtic tuning or MSL for a remap

Dont waste your time with a box. I would recommend MSL Birmingham. Had my cls done by them.

plenty of remappers about the north east , cramlington i think is a tad closer than birmingham , a lad i know at peterlee is doing remaps for £110 .

tuning box pros, - very adjustable , you can remove it when winter sets in. cons - messages are sent via trickery .
remap pros - its sent from the ecu and not done via trickery , cons - once its done your stuck with it when winter sets in .

i bought a bluesparks tuning box , they are based in houghton le spring , its just the cr tech box , cost me £89 , its plug and play , works very well on map 1 , the extra ooooomphhhh is very noticeable and i have more jumper pins to play with also map 2 is untouched as yet .

Thanks for all the advice, think i will try the tunning box as you can easily remove it. Its more for mpg than power. Thanks all

Thanks mate never thought about winter, for the missus driving it with the kids . So probs b the box as you say can easily b turned off or taking off.

i dont see any gains with mpg tbh . maybe getting upto speed is the secret to mpg , but im feeding 6 mouths with an auto box , so can really be conscious of fuel figures in reality . i do know on a run of 80+ miles i see 50 to 55 mpg , around the doors i see 29 to 35 mpg . my wheels spin in comfort mode ( 2nd gear pull offs ) with box fitted and its pretty insane in sport mode ( 1st gear pull offs ).

TDI Tuning are excellent, but don't expect better fuel consumption if you use the extra power.

I wouldn't bother with the cheap options, either boxes or remaps. It may be a truism, but generally speaking you do get what you pay for; no offence to the lad in Peterlee, but what rolling road has he used to develop his map?

MSL won't do you a remap for £110, and you won't get a tuning box from TDI tuning (or Celtic Tuning, for that matter) for £89. There is likely to be a good reason for this.

Another advantage of a tuning box - certainly the TDI Tuning ones - is that they can be remapped for other cars, so if you change your car you may well be able to keep the box and use it on your next car.

bluesparks boxes start @ £150 , £200 and £280 , the cr tech was the gen 1 creation, it worked then and works now on cars as old as mine is , so i opted for that @ £89 on the ebay page . ive no idea if he has a rolling road and is probably using generic maps and simply flashing ecu's ( n o offence taken ) but plenty are using his services . you can also keep the bluespark box for future cars at a cost of i think £50 to reflash and change the plug ends.

Thats ruffly wot im getting 28 -35 round the doors not sure on long run until the weekend off to loch fyne so will find out then. Ive been qouted £250 for box not sure wot make, from Energy tunning in Ashington. I just think the car pulls away abit slow so my foot goes to floor on busy roundabouts etc.

is it manual or auto . if auto have you tried s and c button ?

In c its in 2nd gear . s is 1st gear .

Yeah i read about that. Gunna go for the box, and stop putting sh*t fuel in to keep it as clean as i can in the engine department, ive heard it makes a difference but wether it does or not is yet to be seen.

Try millers ecomax it raises the cetane by 4 points. Makes a derv engine very clean and runs very quiet . 500 ml treats 500 litres . ebay £10 a bottle. Makes normal diesel into super diesel. Supermarket fuel isnt the best tbh.

Bluespark are very good tuning boxes, several types at reasonable prices and you can remove it at any time, check out their website.

I had a Bluespark on my Jag X type and it properly pissed it off. Removed it, all was well. May have been a failed box as it did work for a while.

Your mileage may vary - literally. ECU remap may be nobbled by a Merc service if they touch the ECU, but otherwise should be good, if custom to the car. Generic maps are generic....

Brabus boxes are expensive, but talk to more sensors directly and are supplied by Merc, and can be warranted (to 60K miles) so what does that tell you? They also adjust to the heat/state of the car due to the sensor linkage.

In any case, mind your insurance :)
