I have just had a quote from TB turbos in Lancaster for fitting a turbo to my 1988 Mercedes 300D w124.The price of the installation which takes a week is £2,399.Which I must admit is more expensive than I had imagined.I was hoping to get this done next week while I'am in Egypt, but they are booked up till the second week in November. The point of this thread is do I pay 2.4k to get the turbo done or trade it in for a w210 300turbodiesel your thoughts please.

Trade it in for a *rust free* W210 turbodiesel if thats possible.

...trade it in...
Unless you want to buy an LHD w124 turbo diesel from the continent.
But then you'd have to pay to do the little conversions required before UK registration. Unless you spend alot of time on the continent, its not worth it.
Rgds

Either trade it in or lie down until the urge to fit a turbo goes away!

Spend the money towards a trade-in, you wont regret it.

trade

trade up you will not be disappointed have you thought about what speck you would require you know all the pit falls spike mentioned rust but if its been repaired by a mb body shop then all the better.....at the very least have a test drive if you have not already done so... :D

You don't need a poll on this one.

Trade up.

Hi

Keep what you have for another few years and then buy a 211 320 cdi when they get down to the 10-15K mark.

I'am inclined to agree with you, as a decent R plate w210 turbo diesel is 10k upwards and they are not as good as the CDi engines, and I do like driving my w124, on it's own it is fine. It's just a shame they have so many towing related problems, and apart from that, I have got kind'a used to having no car hp repayments for all these years it would break my heart to pay off 15k+ especially since I have spent so much getting the car the way I wanted it. I might look at a 5 series Bmw turbodiesel to tide me over till the CDi's are more affordable.

Don't bother. You will find the driving streesful as the engine is tuned for power not torque, so necessitates lots of gear changes. Aha I hear you say, I'll go for an auto.

Get some earplugs, the manuals are quiet the autos are noisy.

Just for interest, I own an E300 Turbo diesel estate, and tow a Bailey Vendee caravan, 1350kg all up, absolute dream tow car. Mid 20's per gallon towing, load of torque, really nice car. As the rest say, trade up, you will not regret it.

Trade up!

The £2.4K will be money never to be seen again! ;)

Run your W124 and then buy whatever you fancy in a couple of years! :)

Cheers,

Will
