I can hear the wretched tapping noise when idle, any known cures for this?

Have just changed oil using mobil 1 and stp engine flush but now sounds a bit louder. Seems to dissaper when in neutrel but comes back when placed in D.

cheers

Dont like using engine flush... prefer to just run some cheapish oil for a day or two.

Can you not be any more specific as to where the noise is coming from?

Left hand side? sounds very much like the hydraulic tappets.

Its only when idle and again intermiitant. Sometimes its there sometimes its not. If i rev it goes when it happens.

Mine does it sometime as well. It sounds like the ABS pump or something. It is the bit with MOT written on it .

its not that - this is a very distinctive tapping noise which comes and goes. More so if i have not allowed the car to warm up and drive.

came into work this morning and its gone!

Whats the mileage on your 320?......I assume its in excess of 60,000?

I can only assume its a hydraulic tappet on its way out....I have found that Wynns Hydraulic Tappet fluid does a good job of quitening them down.....you just sling it in with the oil.

Its likely that your tappet/s wwere on their way out anyway and the change to a thinner oil has just exacerbated the situation.

The only long term solution is to change the hydraulic tappets and unfortunately you will have to change all of the tappets on the cylinder bank making the noise, as there is no way of telling which is the faulty one.

Its worth noting that many Mercs with higher mileages getting ticking tappets and if you can live with the noise at idle then don't worry about it....its should only become a worry if the noise stays once you pass 1500-2000 rpm, then it really is time to get them changed.

mileage is 76k so i think you are right.

I thought using mobil1 would have some negative impact! but hey.

I will give wynns a blast and lets see but it does seem to have gone!

Hi

Personal preference here but i would not use any oil additive

Another option could be one or more noisy or blocked injectors which sound a lot like rattling tappets, they also affect idling making the problem worse.

I've this experience on another car, not a Mercedes though.

dont think its that as this would affect performance would it not? my idling is now near normal and pick up wise it seems ok.

What would i need to do to test this?
