Now this is something I first saw as a child, and always thought it neat. Having Googled it I've found it difficult to find much on the subject - it seems underground garage has a different meaning to the crazy kids of today!! :D

The only supplier I've found so far - Cardok - charges £40-50k and seems to sell to the posher parts of London only, which is frankly too expensive, so does anyone else know of another supplier of such underground storage devices??

Wiked. Init?

Had one of those in Belfast 30 years ago. Not there anymore due to redevelopment.

Talbir, has got quite a funky garage setup. I don't think it goes underground, but it's pretty cool all the same.

I can't remember who the maufacturer was... hopefully he'll be along soon and tell all.

If you follow Jenners link to double parking systems, we saw vacant lots in New York used as car parks which used these lifts to get twice as many cars in the same space.

They are available in the UK for around £7000 I believe, but do not go underground.

We rebuilt a house in the Little Boltons about 8 years ago and they had one of these.

You can imagine the sort of kit they had downstairs.

Thanks for all the links. Had a quick flick through, but will have a proper look tomorrow.

As I said in my first post, I remember seeing these on tele when I was a lad, and thought they were wonderful. It looks inevitable that we'll be re-doing the drive next year, and so it's the ideal time to do it.

Emails sent, asking for an indication of price.

Holy thread revival Batman. Has anyone gathered any experience of this during the intervening 13.5 years?

Well, sort of. My daughter lives in Luxembourg and nearly all houses and apartments over there have underground car parks for residents or the garage is at street level and the house is built above. Much of the time the "garage" area is as big as the footprint of the house leaving room to build additional rooms under the house or many cellars for things like the central heating boiler, storage room for additional fridges/freezers etc. The apartment she lived in had a communal underground car park serving 4 blocks..

I am surprised it has not yet happened in this country particularly on new build.

Thank you for sharing.

If things were made mandatory in new builds, like underground or beneath building parking, solar panels, and other things which are difficult or expensive to do retrospectively, then we’d progressively making progress and avoid the need to catch up later. I would do this for both residential and commercial development if the decision was left to me.

If I ever build my own home I’ll definitely make ground floor and basement and utility and storage, and the upper floors for living.

It has happened here, as long ago as the 1960's.
Underground garages and car parking with high rise flats above. If you go by today, the entrances were bricked up long ago due to vandalism and anti social behaviour, effectively a large space had been made for low life to hang around unseen by anyone passing by. You would need to sort out the anti social behaviour in this country before plans like this would be acceptable.

Exactly this.
There’s a good few of these in Hendon where some of my school pals lived. Nobody ever parked their cars there.

The post was about having a garage under a private house?
Yes, but that was back in 2009, we've moved it on a bit
