Pulled over to let a car on an emergency call (blue lights and sirens) past at Sloane Square today, and was surprised to see it was an unmarked silver Audi TT. Seems an improbable choice for police work these days (although I know they've used small sports cars such as MGBs in the past).

Anyone else seen something similar recently?

I'm all for using the criminal's cars. Just hope it doesn't go down the Miami Vice route of Lambos and Ferraris.

In the early 90s I recall a Police TV program where the unmarked cars included an Escort Cosworth. It kept breaking down IIRC.

I think that was the famous one that my brother in law solved when he worked for Ford Special Vehicles. Humberside fitted the blue strobes in the front air intakes causing extreme under bonnet temperatures and repeated failures

Ever since that day any UK spec Police car irrespective of make is fitted out at Ford's special vehicles center.

^ have you seen the cost of fuel these day? I don't want my tax money refilling those cars, ;)

Seriously though, are those cars really faster in a pursuit situation? I imagine a BMW 335d to be fast enough.

Most likely not a job motor 'not to say we dont have a corkers in the Met!'

Fire service and police Top brass police Officers can 'blue light up', thier private vehicles 'get mileage, part insurance and fuel paid for by thier service', to allow for on-call duty travel. Saves the service money in the long term

It could be a Home Office car, as they're not too far away in Marsham Street.

Don't forget the traffic police also like to use unusual cars to keep people on their toes :thumb:

' Audi TT Officer's Vehicle

### THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT PAID FOR OR SUPPLIED BY THE LFB, BUT IS A PRIVATE MOTOR VEHICLE###

This beautiful 09' reg Audi TT is used by a Senior Fire Officer in London. It has an imported light-bar from Asia, plus LED lights under the grill and on the dash. Also full electronic siren with bull-horn!

***Reg no. obscured for privacy reasons*** '

I caught a quick chat with our "tag team" a few months ago - they were parked at subway:) one in an impreza and the other a BMW saloon. Upon closer inspection the BMW is an M sported 330D with remote boot release and the rear seats replace by a dog cage - brilliant.

We have an Evo and an IS430 as well. Some nice motors in Humberside Police.

Here it is in action...

Round here they use "tweaked" Silver and Black Octavia VRSes

One shot past me whilst I was within my +7% on the motorway and it was like I was standing still.

Thanks for the responses.

In my experience, unmarked cars have always been full four/five seaters, and have the same number of doors. Interesting to hear that a Scirocco has also been spotted...

J-B-R: I did wonder if it might have been a private car, but had no idea that officers (top-brass or otherwise) had this option open to them.

I was also wondering if it might have been some kind of specialist incident response car, more focused on getting the officer(s) to the scene rather than being able to take people away once there.

Audi TT Officer's Vehicle

Hmm, interesting. That's the most likely explanation.

I thought it was silver, but it was quite dark at the time so I could have been mistaken. Either that, or he's recently taken delivery of a new one...

We've got them too. I can't possibly comment in a public forum as to how I know they both don't have a 155 limiter and could quite happily exceed it if they did.

Must be pushing 280 bhp or more I guess. Would be interesting to see what the reliability is like against the Volvos as I think they're tuned to about the same power - certainly they are capable of both keeping up with each other.

<<how I avoided jail time in my younger years I'll never know>>

Was on the A65 just west of Skipton yesterday and passed an unmarked silver Golf GTi which had pulled someone. Notably they had left it filthy, so not only was it 'unmarked' it was also in disguise.
