Just saw a YouTube video re this.
I guess these will replace the marked vans

I thought the point of speed cams/vans was to slow down those who broke speed limits
in an accident blackspot. Anyway, it is more of a reason to ensure you drive within the limits,
conditions of road/weather etc

"The aim is to deter speeding and prevent serious collisions by encouraging "consistent safe driving behaviours", it said.

What utter BS.....if the aim was to slow people down they would be bright an obvious.....if their unmarked vans catch people speeding they have clearly failed to slow them down....and the first they know about it will be when the NIP hits the door mat!!! If there was a bright van there people who were going fast would slow down.....job done.....if they don't slow down or miss a bright yellow van then they deserve everything they get!!!

You may recall that some years ago, motorway speed cams on gantry's were painted in great, ie same colour as the gantry. This, at the time was deemed unlawful and they were subsequently painted yellow.

From day one, my argument has been, if the the fixed, mobile cams were really up there to reduce accidents, not only would they be painted in a bright yellow - but some placards up there pointing to the cams. As we all know, governments and local authorities are often full of crap and spout crap to justify their totally BS reasoning.

Why can't these parasites be open and honest why the cams are there is beyond me.

Whilst the article doesn’t spell it out, the objective is not to slow people down when the camera van is present at a specific location, it’s the slow people down in all locations all the time, even when there’s not a camera van present.

As the posts in this thread show, drivers tend to slow down when they see a highly visible marked camera van, or said another way drivers drive faster when they don’t see a highly visible marked camera van.

This in nitiative intends to slow drivers down at all times - more consistently - based upon the greater likelihood of being caught speeding, as the camera van is not highly visible, and so may not be spotted until it’s/ too late or not at all.

The article wasn’t terribly explicit, with just once subtle comment which can be easily overlooked: “The aim is to deter speeding and prevent serious collisions by encouraging "consistent safe driving behaviours", it said.

^ exactly this. It worries me that it seems like the majority fail to understand what I would have hoped was the blindingly obvious. Even members of a motoring forum can't work it out.

Because it wont slow people down.....most who don't read car forums etc won't know anything about it until they are caught.....then they might slow down for a while....then they will speed again because EVERYONE spends.......without exception to greater or lesser degree and anyone saying otherwise is a liar.....Anyone expecting the average speed to slow on the dangerous road ( and legally they should only be on road with a high accident rate or a fatality unless that rule has changed) more with a hidden camera than a bright one needs their bumps felt!!

It’s being reported in the news:

It’s not new and not unique to Bristol & Somerset:

3 0f the links refer to the same story I posted and a similar date.
That’s right, that’s why I pasted them in my post, to show that it’s been more widely reported.

The bottom link is not the same story, but there are umpteen news articles about unmarked and “grey” camera vans in other parts of the country.

Average speed cameras tend to be more effective as there is no way of escaping them .

Average speed cameras are very effective deterrents. On the roads they’re installed on. Not so effective on all of the other roads.

That's correct. I misread your post. However, a few seconds after posting, I realised my mistake and then deleted the post, i.e., "edit."
You were very quick to respond, too quick for me.👍

They are good but where you get nose-to-tail stop/star and or slower moving traffic, some people put their foot down until they get to the next check point. However, I am a fan of them and agree with your sentiments.

I have time on my hands at the moment 😀

Either that or the Dazzler in my pseudonym refers to my dazzling typing skills 😀

Speed cameras were painted yellow in an attempt to make them more acceptable to the motoring public. It helps to gain people's trust that the cameras are there to stop speeding, as opposed to catching out unsuspecting motorists. It also helps with making people feel that it's 'fair play'. There's no legal requirement for speed cameras to be painted yellow, though. However, the British public generally does not react well to hidden speed cameras. That been said, the legal argument against hiding speed cameras is that if the public isn't warned about their presence, they are ineffective, but this issue can be addressed by signage, and - again - painting them yellow is just one way of dealing with this, but it's not mandatory. Technology speaking, speed camera vans are not hidden, I.e. they're not behind a bush, instead the van is always parked in plain sight.

(I would add that if you're driving on a fast road and you se a van parked on the hard shoulder for no obvious reason... you should slow down. Nothing to do with speeding, though, just safe driving)

Very common in my neck of the woods and many more to be added soon by funding from gubmint. There have been some strange choices for locating them though, not in locations where thay are really needed. It is eye rolling when you see drivers speeding between the cameras and then hammering on the brakes when they come across them.
