Does anyone know how to update the navigation without taking the car to the stealership on a W204 C63?

Thanks,

Stefan

Are you pre-facelift NTG4 (pop-up screen) or post facelift NTG4.5 (permanently visible screen)? If pre facelift, is you build date before 11/2008, as if so the most recent maps you can install is 2014-15 due to the small nav partition on the HDD. However, if you are NTG4 then you have a choice between buying the latest maps from the likes of comand.co.uk or buying "second user" genuine DVD's from a forum member or from eBay. Installation is easy, done it twice myself, just takes about 2 1/4 hours. Trick is empty CD changer, start engine, connect battery charger, switch engine off but return key to position 2 so comand will stay live, insert DVD1 and watch it start, about 1 1/2-1 3/4 hours later it will ask for DVD2. However, post facelift NTG4.5 needs a PIN from the MB mainframe as well as the DVD's, so your options are MB main dealer or someone like comand.co.uk who can get the PIN and DVD's for you as well as installing the maps.

If you go for latest DVD's, whether NTG4 or 4.5, be prepared for a shock at the cost - 3 figures! Occasionally MB offer a cheap £99 update, but don't know if they do 4.5 on that deal. For NTG4 you can pick up 1-2 year old updates for 1/2 or less of the new cost, and then sell them on once you've installed! Don't be tempted by cheapo copied DVD's (often offered at £20-30) as they can cause major problems with Comand, stick to genuine MB DVD's.

What navigation have you got ?
a) upto mid 2011 nav with opening screen that is manually opened. (Audio-50-APS NTG4)
b) upto mid 2011 nav with electric opening screen. (Comand NTG4) - and if so, what year is it ? (to determine if it has small or large hard-disk as per Chrishazle post)
c) Mid 2011 facelift with fixed screen with Becker Map pilot nav module in glovebox (Audio-20 with Becker Map Pilot)
d) Mid 2011 facelift with fixed screen (COMAND NTG4.5) full colour nav.

Cheers
Richard

When I updated my old C63(Comand NTG4), I got the DVD from MB for the £99 deal.
I then sold it on ebay auction for £75 which I though was excellent, I just left the car running as I didn't have a battery charger

Stefan's car has NTG4.5

my nav has a fixed screen. spoke to command and they said mb club have a small discount so will order through them.

If I don't leave the car running will the battery die!?

It's not that the battery will die, it's that Comand could go to sleep. Not a major problem, as next time it wakes up it will resume the update from where it left off - but as you have NTG4.5 updating is not a DIY job as you need the PIN, which only an MB main dealer or indie like comand.co.uk with Xentry access can supply. If you can't get the main dealer £99 deal, comand.co.uk are your best bet, and Lightwater is not too much of a trek from London.

Hey can anyone help I updated the nav with the usb from command.co.uk and now I have no sat nav and am getting the message saying map update not possible ejected DVD and I don’t have any nav at all not even the old one.... it did work momentarily then just stopped?! Any ideas? Thanks

Remove the USB drive from the USB port, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in.

If it still comes-up with the message 'Update not possible', repeat the step above.

It's a quirk of the USB installation. It eventually goes away and the installation continues.

(Les likely, you may have a faulty USB drive, in which case Comand.co.uk will sort this out for you)

On rereading, you may need to start the process from scratch, i.e. stick the USB drive and wait for the 'do you want to update?' etc message. Carry-out the update as per normal, but this time remember that if the 'Update not possible' message comes-up, simply remove the USB drive then plug it back in, and the installation will resume.

I would love to start again but every time I put the usb in it just says map update not possible, ejecting dvd, please refer to owners manual

So Command.co.uk sent out the 2nd USB and this still does not work, they have advised that my hard disk has most likely crashed and i am going to take it to them on Saturday....

Real pain, i didnt know this could happen!! Anyone else had this issue?

Yes! Had another car in today for exactly the same thing. Hard drive failure. Mercedes will tell you the Comand system needs replacing and here is an invoice for £2,500 plus! We dont do that ;-)

Waiting for a price back from Richard, need to come in ASAP to get it fixed!!

I wonder if it can be replaced with an SSD these days, to make it faster and more reliable?

No idea i am just having to stump up the cash to change it, which Command are doing this weekend.
