I think my new car comes with this. Does this not count as a tracker for insurance purposes?

It should do, but it depends on your insurance company.
At one time every alarm/tracker/immobilizer had to be Thatcham approved to be recognised by insurance companies. No idea if this is still the case.
Have you asked them?

I think it depends on what it actually is.

If it's only a bolt-on service on the app, then possibly it won't qualify as a tracker for insurance purposes.

If the car's GSM modem and GPS processor are actually protected from being disabled by thieves (e.g. they have internal rechargeable batteries and will continue to work even if the main battery is disconnected, etc), then possibly yes.

But this also raises the question of whether this service simply includes sharing the location data with the police, or do MB actually have a live monitoring centre and people who will try to recover the stolen car?

Yep, they don't really provide much info on it which is strange

Doea anyone know if installing an immobiliser invalidates warranty? Still in two minds but if I go for a non can bus one eg meta s5 deadlock, they have to cut wiring. There doesn't seem to be any answers from Mercedes whether this is allowed or not. Argh

Most still do insist on Thatcham....just as an assurance that its built/fitted to a certain standard....and not that your mate Dave has put a hidden switch in the car somewhere! The downside is that even good immobilisers like Ghost are not recognised by insurance companies as they never put it forward to Thatcham for testing......cost I'm guessing.....or maybe it just does not reach their standards.

Interesting point about ghost, thinking about the invalid insurance post I wonder if fitting ghost is a reportable mod?

I've tried phoning different dealers and noone sounds confident when giving me an answer

At least with ghost there's no wire cutting involved. The meta s5 deadlock is both a tracker and remote immobiliser. I'm leaning towards it as I'd rather someone be able to drive off if they car jack me but then I can remotely immobilise it when they get further down the road. The problem is, the installation requires wire cutting. I want something in writing that it's not going to affect my new car warranty as I can't be bothered with that hassle.
