Hi,

What a plonker I am. I've put petrol in my diesel car! It was 1/2 full of diesel and I topped up with petrol and have driven 4 miles home.

Now the car wont start. A few questions:

Can I use my Pela pump and suck out the fuel and refill myself?
Does anyone know of a mobile van who can do this for me either tonight or tomorrow?

Anything other plans/tips?

Green Flat want £220+VAT for a van to do this or will tow to a garage within 10miles on Monday.

Jeez......what a way to spend a Saturday evening!

£220 is a fair price.

I did the same thing a few years ago (but with an empty tank) and the RAC man towed me to a place he knew which pumped it all out and drained the fuel lines and filters etc. The whole operation took around two hours. They charged about £200, and I have noticed no ill effects since.

Do you not have any breakdown service?

We charge around £50-100 to do this job depending on how hard it is to get to the tank.

Some suction devices dont work as they have anti syphon.

Green Flag wanted £220+VAT for the fix which sounded a bit steep. They did offer to tow me to a garage on Monday morning. So I put those offers in the back pocked and did a Google and found Dr Fuel. It's still not cheap, but it's a mobile van coming to my house which means I wont lose any time at work on Monday.

Is there any potential damage to the engine or will draining an refilling likely be the cure?

I would get it all syphoned out then remove the fuel filter; empty it and re-fill with diesel or replace. Then keep your fingers crossed!

I did that 10 years ago...cost about that, plus the lost fuel.

I hope that you get it sorted with just a tank drain and wash out. It can very easily have affected the fuel pump and cost very large amounts.

I have one of these Stop Diesel Misfuelling | Diesel Misfuelling Prevention Device on my CDI. It's a tiny bit of a pain to use but it's almost (nothing is ever 100%) impossible to misfuel with one. Worth every penny for the peice of mind. Especially since we have diesels and petrols.

Especially since we have diesels and petrols.

I think in part that's what got me, owning 1 petrol and 1 diesel car. Plus a busy morning rushing around trying to do too much at once. Laziness is the future.

LOL, Paul did that to my forfour CDi once. We'd been in Scotland with a hire car which was also a forfour but petrol back late Sat night, up late sunday and in a rush, filled the car at a motorway services (filled ie was empty!) and we got back on the motorway, the car spluttered/missfired and for some reason I looked at the fuel receipt.. Premium Unleaded... first reaction was 'yeah' 2nd was s*** and switched off the engine, luckily next junction was just by where we were and coasted off and down the junction and parked safely, also good was Gav lived right near there and had the L200 with the A-Frame!

He got away with the tank drain & fuel filter changed, he was B***** lucky!!

Hope your's is OK too Will

Dr Fuel have come up with the goods :)

They arrived within the hour and started work. They separate the fuel rail and simultaneously drain the tank and fed in fresh diesel from a jerry can. Once the tank was drained they reconnected the fuel rail and put some diesel in the tank. Job done. It took about 1.5hrs all up as everything is frugal with the A2, even the rate diesel can be sucked out.

For £146 all inclusive I'm happy with their service and it's much cheaper than Green Flag.
