They aren't normally fitted to UK cars.

My C55, same engine I presume, has the secondary air pump fitted there.
When a hose from it came loose I got a 'check engine' light so I doubt you could run without it unless you sorted out the signal the ECU is expecting.

The additional air stops the petrol poisoning the catalytic converters or encouraging overheating of them.
