FOCUS (to be rectified)
Hi,
just joined yesterday, reason being i want to upgrade my tired old focus for a nice used 4x4.
my shortlist consisted of....
discovery ..... ruled out as too sluggish.
xc90..... as above.
vw toureg....... still considering.
bmw x5........ still considering. (but wife hates the harsh ride)
nissan xtrail....... sensible option(but boring i guess)
MB ML320 / 420 = reason i'm here.

drove a ML for the first time yesteday (420) was not a particularly nice example, but wow does it go.
it had me hooked and had it not been for the rusty rear wheel arch, i would have been tempted.
still have to try a 320, though.
any pointers you guys could give on this range would be appreciated?
ie , what to look out for and avoid?
servicing in the hampshire area? i have one specialist garage close by, New and used car sales specialising in Mercedes-Benz near Winchester.

this is a lot of money for me so i need to "get it right", as best i can.
thanks for looking.
Simon
budget is in the region of £16k.

I owned a 2007 ML 420 CDI Sport for seven month and the engine was an absolute joy, fuel economy was good too; easily achieved over 30mpg on a run.

Negatives of ownership; interior feels cheap and the seats don't age well at all. Make sure you check EVERY button and electric. Gearbox delay when setting off is suicidal too, takes about 2 seconds to engage but feels like 2 minutes when you pull out at a junction!

I have the 2007 280, there is not a great deal between the 280/320 having driven both. A lot between it and the 420 I would imagine, my friend has a 4.2 v8 diesel in his q7 and its crazy, average mpg in town is 11 though.

We had an x5 previous and wouldn't do it again after having a w164 ml, the drive is so different and I didn't like it initially but now I could not go back to having arm ache from parallel parking an x5, they feel so huge, this feels like an estate car to drive.

Look for specs, the x5's do not differ massively, the ml however, wow, it was nearly impossible to find a decent one at all, but to find a black one, with black leather that wasn't a complete dog was near impossible, they normally had one or the other, or where just rubbish.

Mines for sale as I am craving a v8/v10 petrol big time

Have you tried the 350CDi. They are within budget with some haggling especially if we see no snow soon. Also the new W166 seems now to be affecting W164 values.

If you have sufficient funds to run a 420/450 then they are most definitely the sleeper car of the bunch.

It has been mentioned over the initial lull between pressing the accelerator and the car actually moving. This is true also of the XC90s unsure over whether the Q7/X5 exhibit this behaviour. Discoverys are nice but so slow.

ive had two x5s and a range rover sport before coming to my ml63, i have to say before i got the ml i thought the looks were horrible but now im won over, its by far the most comfortable to drive, i do think the dash is cheap plastic for such a hight end car, obviously i dont have lack of power.
what milage are you doing just some of the 350 petrols are so cheap now it would feel like you'd stole it, im getting anything up to 23 mpg from the big v8 so cant imagine the smaller petrols been that bad to run
