According to 5th gear, Ford Mustangs are being imported by some dealers in left hand drive form for £13,000 to £16,000 depending on engine size etc. The higher price will bring in a V8.

How can those prices be real? Even at two dollars to the pound .......

Or for that money a modest Golf.

Yes, but don't forget that pretty much all cars are very cheap in the US. They don't earn as much as we do either, but mainly they wouldn't put up with silly prices for new cars like we do ;)

I think it's fair to say that they're buying Ford Mustangs for prices similar to an average spec UK Ford Focus?

Will

How tempting is that car? And for that price......hmmmmmm

Left hookers only, So you cant overtake to use all that power:D

This post made me think and the very cheapest VW Passat (they don't list a Golf) in the US is $23,995 but then there will be countless taxes to add to the price!

The VW Rabbit! ;) starts at $15,600 less taxes.

goes to show just how much the politicians rip us off in the EU.
i cannot believe that due to all this taxation, life here is actually better than in canada or the US

Because they're cheaply built and have van style live rear axles?

Note even Americans tend to buy Hondas/Toyotas/Kias etc.

In America houses are cheap because they're made from wood in the cheapest way possible, and there is no great shortage of land.

Cars are cheap due to the big money being made on the finance and the limited range of models - we get far more choice and options.

If you get ill in America you have to sell your wooden house and your Toyota Camry to fund your healthcare treatment.

It's true we pay more tax and houses and cars are more expensive here, but then you get what you pay for...

what vw is 7690. i do not think you can buy a passat for 12000 here
Polo and Passat starts at £15,825 but remember and this is the difficult bit.... The UK price is including ALL taxes, including VAT and NO haggling with a dealer. The grass is always greener elsewhere, but having been to numerous 'elsewhere's' I much prefer the field I'm in. My experience of the US is either you are a 'have' or a 'have not' and believe me there is no way I would want to be the latter.

My own thoughts are that the bigger European cars are discounted in the US to compete with the home market and we in Europe are paying for this subsidisation, but the smaller cars are not that much cheaper if at all.

The standard US V8 Mustang Coupe sells for $26080 and should include the following:

17" Premium Painted Cast Aluminum Wheels P235/55ZR 17 Z-Tires Rear Decklid Spoiler Front Fog Lamps Stainless Steel Dual Exh Dual Power Mirrors Variable Interval Wipers Rear Window Defroster

It would be interesting to see what the UK import has as the price of £16000 does not sound right. I tend to allow a straight swap of dollars to pounds and that then allows for ALL shipping import taxes etc. With the £ being so attractive my formula should give you a few bob back but no way would it equate to £16000 :o :o ;)

Its the same with all cars in the US, a C63 AMG base price is something like £27000, thats nearly half what we pay!
It would probably work out cheaper to import a US spec C63 than buy one in the UK, if it wasnt for the steering wheel on the wrong side.

not at the same prices that we pay though.
much lower.

American cars are a different breed to what we get in Europe, even the Japanese ones aren't the same as our models.

It's true that you can buy a giant car with a V8 engine for $25k, but these old lumps are based on 1970s platfoms with 1950s technology, that's why they're so cheap.

It's quality vs quantity...

If you get ill in America you have to sell your wooden house and your Toyota Camry to fund your healthcare treatment.

not if you have health insurance. you will not pay a penny.
Which works out ok if you never fall sick as it is premium related

But if you have a few health problems you're on your own...

Honda Civic in UK £14480 in the US $15010. It would be interesting to see what percentage of Mr Joe Public's annual salary these costs equate to?

John

houses in the US are made of wood?.
I don't think so.
Just admit that a garage space selling for £250000 in chelsea is OTT and do not believe the spin of euro car makers. americans do have some very good cars as well as bad ones too. same as europe e.g rover, Mg , old skodas. lancias e.t.c so generalisation is not that appropriate.
as for steering,i have had two LHD's and never had any problem overtaking
